Mary Beth Evans Reflects On Supercouple Status
Steve ‘Patch’ Johnson was introduced on DOOL in 1985 as a mercenary who was hired to terrorize Kayla Brady. Instead, he ended up falling for her, which kicked off one of the soap’s most beloved romances.
Their on-again, off-again relationship has been a central part of Steve’s storylines, with the couple enduring despite numerous challenges. Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans chatted with Swooon about Patch and Kayla’s lasting love. “For us, unlike today’s coupledoms, we were put together from day one, and it’s always been about us,” the actress said.
Mary Beth Evans continued, “There were different things that broke us up or whatever, but they always loved each other. They never didn’t love each other. That’s not how it is at all today. I feel like we’re one of the last holdouts in that, but I love it, and I feel so lucky.”

Stephen Nichols agreed with his longtime co-star. “We’re a couple who has always loved one another, and when we were not together, when we were apart, it was always because something happened, and she thought I was gone or dead or divorced. We were never not together in our minds. We were always in love.”
The actor’s initial departure in 1990 led to a 16-year absence. During this time, Nichols appeared in other soaps, including General Hospital. Mary Beth Evans was also on GH and the fan favorites played love interests Stefan Cassadine and Katherine Bell.
