Fans of the ABC medical drama Doctor Odyssey have started to suspect that things aren’t exactly what they appear on the show. Actor Joshua Jackson has discussed this theory. However, he also revealed one important factor that complicates things.

A Medical Drama At Sea

Doctor Odyssey revolves around Max, a doctor aboard a luxury cruise ship, The Odyssey. Actor Joshua Jackson plays Dr. Max Bankman himself, who tries to help patients with the help of his crew.

In the first episode, it’s revealed that Max himself was the first COVID-19 patient in the United States. While it nearly killed him, he claimed to have survived with the help of his coworkers.

Despite this, fans suspect things might not be as they appear. One popular fan theory alleges that Max didn’t survive his ordeal and The Odyssey serves as some sort of vessel to the afterlife. Added to this viewers, have noted some otherworldly aspects about the ship. A character even comments that the ship is “about as far from hell as you can get… This ship is heaven.” The second episode also notably features a staircase surrounded in light. This brings to mind a “stairway to heaven.”

Another variation of this theory is a bit more mundane. Max is still dying, not dead, and the events of the series are possibly a fever dream. This would mean the whole series is in Max’s head.

In a statement with TV Line, Jackson himself revealed he’s aware of this fan theory. Discussing it with the publication, “I love this theory.” He added, “I have appreciated the internet sleuths’ work on it and I think it’s great.”

Only One Person Really Knows The Truth

However, Jackson couldn’t confirm if the theory was true for one special reason. As he put it, “I cannot tell you what goes on inside the mind of [series co-creator] Ryan Murphy, but we also had a similar theory operating on set.” He continued, “Only Ryan Murphy knows.”

There are a few other reasons to suspect that the ship could be some sort of Purgatory-like state. Murphy has worked on series that dealt with supernatural themes before, notably the American Horror Story franchise.

Added to that, the name of the ship, The Odyssey, brings to mind the classic Greek epic of the same name. Not only was the classic epic filled with supernatural events, it even included a scene where the characters encounter shades in the Underworld.

Before starring in Doctor Odyssey, Jackson has had a variety of other notable acting roles. These include roles in Dawson’s Creek, Fringe, The Affair, and Dr. Death.
