Menendez Brothers

Lyle and Erik Menendez are currently serving life sentences for the murders of their parents in 1989. The Los Angeles County District Attorney has revealed new evidence in the case that could impact the brothers’ sentencing. If they are released, will the Menendez brothers have any inheritance left? Here is what has been revealed.

How Much Money Did Erik & Lyle Menendez Spend?

Thirty-five years after the Menendez brothers were initially sentenced to life in prison, Lyle and Erik may get the chance for their case to be reopened. The LA County District Attorney George Gascon recently confirmed that his office is reviewing new evidence in the case. Although he said that the brothers were “clearly the murderers” of their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, they are currently trying to determine if the new details could have led the jury to come to a “different conclusion.”

With the possibility of a resentencing hearing on the horizon for the brothers, some people are wondering about the Menendez estate. When their parents died in 1989, Lyle and Erik took temporary control of their dad’s estate. At the time, it was valued at $14.5 million.

Over the span of six months, the pair managed to spend close to $1 million. They spent it on partying, travel, and shopping. Then, they were arrested for the murders and much of the rest of the estate went to legal fees.

By 1994, the Menendez brothers reportedly spent $10.8 million, half of which went to legal fees. Two years later, they were sentenced to life in prison.

After the pair were found guilty of their parents’ murders, they look all access to the estate. California has a “Slayer Statute” that prohibits the perpetrator from profiting from the victim’s estate.

Ryan Murphy Says The Brothers Could Be Released By Christmas

There is no doubt that Lyle and Erik Menendez have fallen far from their once-lavish lifestyle. Their current net worth isn’t known, but they have spent nearly 30 years behind bars. They don’t have any assets to their name, and they have increasing liabilities from their mounting legal fees.

If the case is reopened, the Menedez brothers may have close to a $0 net worth.

Erik and Lyle’s story has gained new attention recently due to Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez StoryIt is a 10-episode series that takes a look at what allegedly unfolded in the Menedez home.

While they were once thought to have been cold-blooded killers who killed their parents for their money, the Netflix series paints somewhat of a different picture. It highlights the arguments from the defense about the alleged physical, emotional, and sexual abuse the boys experienced at the hands of their father.

Series creator Ryan Murphy said that he hopes it gives the brothers a way out. “We gave them their moment in the court of public opinion. Basically, we did give them a platform,” he said. “I think they can be out of prison by Christmas. I really believe that.”
