‘Deadliest Catch’ Cameraman Shares Behind-The-Scenes Secrets
A cameraman from Discovery’s Deadliest Catch recently took the time to answer some fan questions about the show. People have watched the intense and grueling conditions crab fisherman experience on the show for 20 seasons now. Viewers don’t often think about the people behind the scenes making the show happen. Deadliest Catch Cameraman Answers Fan Questions
Being a cameraman on Deadliest Catch is a tough job. The person shared a photo on Reddit in r/pics.
They wrote, “I was a cameraman for Deadliest Catch on the Cornelia Marie. This was my favorite picture.”
The person, who goes by juggerknott on Reddit, shared a photo of the deck on the ship tilting while one fisherman can be seen trying to hold on and keep things from falling over.
In the comments, he took the time to answer some fan questions about the show. One person asked about how hard the job was.
They replied, “It was definitely a mental challenge. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. We were out for 2-3 weeks straight, with one day to offload, then back out, from October to March.”
The response continued, “They would come in for a day after their tanks were full or 2 weeks after they caught the first pot of crab, or else they would start to go bad.”
Another person asked whether or not the crew on the boat ate crabs when they were out at sea. Surprisingly, the answer was no.
“No, they stock their cabinets and freezers with junk food,” the cameraman said. “In this job, they need every crab they can get, sometimes they will go days pulling up empty pots, costing them thousands of dollars, so every crab counts.”
A third fan asked about the legitimacy of the show, pointing out that recent seasons of Deadliest Catch have seemed scripted. However, the cameraman assured everyone that it was legit. “The stories are true, the tensions are high,” they wrote.
Discovery Crew Became Friends With The Fishermen
The Discovery cameraman, who also has filmed for Life Below Zero, revealed several other facts about the show.
There are only two cameras onboard each boat and the Discovery crew was working just as hard as the people crabbing. That said, there were times when the cameras got put down. While they typically filmed anytime they were on deck, there were some days where the weather wasn’t terrible and the cameramen and crew would get to have some fun together.
Additionally, the crews on Deadliest Catch are “awesome,” according to the cameraman. They went on to say that some of the fishermen have become best friends with the Discovery crew.
