‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Releases ’90s Style Teaser Trailer
Dexter: Original Sin drops its release date for December 13. The spin-off series will be available through streaming, before its linear Showtime debut. With a trailer released, the upcoming series already reads like a love letter to the 1990s.
The Prequel Series Has A Star-Studded Cast
The upcoming series serves as a prequel to the American crime drama Dexter, which revolved around the titular Dexter Morgan. Working as a forensic technician in Miami by day, Morgan lives a double life as a serial killer, hunting down those he thinks have gotten away with their crimes. Dexter: Original Sin looks at a younger version of Morgan who is just starting his work with the Miami police.
The series will premiere 10 episodes taking place in 1991 Miami. The story will follow Dexter as he contends with his urge to kill, eventually developing a vigilante mindset, attacking those he feels need to be brought to justice.
Patrick Gibson will play Dexter in his younger years. Michael Carlyle Hall, who played the role in the original series, will voice the character’s inner monologues. Christian Slater will also play a younger version of Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father. Other notable names attached to the series include Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who the trailer highlights as a “special guest star.”
Dexter’s narration offers the sole dialogue within the teaser trailer: “I’m a killer but I wasn’t born this way; I was made. By my history. By the people around me. They say it takes a village to raise a killer.”
As Deadline noted, the trailer already puts the upcoming series’ 1990s aesthetic on full display. This can be seen in everything from the characters’ fashions to the brief glimpses of furniture. Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” also plays throughout. While the song technically came out in 2002, it heavily evokes the electronic music that became popular during, and for many defined, the decade.
Another Sequel Series Is In Development
The prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, is expected for release through streaming and the Paramount+ on-demand service on December 13, 2024. The series will have its linear broadcast on Showtime two days later.
The Dexter series is part of a larger, and still growing, universe. The original series’ first season took inspiration from the Jeff Lindsay novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. However, later seasons took the story in its own direction.
An earlier spin-off, Dexter: New Blood, came out in 2021. This series revolved around Dexter moving to New York using a new identity.
In addition to this, a sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, is also believed to be in development. Unlike the prequel series, Hall is expected to reprise the title role.
