‘Law & Order: SVU’ Brings Back Fan Favorite After Backlash
Law & Order: SVU made a controversial casting move recently. The show let Kelli Giddish go in a cost-cutting measure and wrote Amanda Rollins out of the series. This didn’t go over well with some other cast members. Mariska Hargitay, who playes Olivia Benson, made it clear she wasn’t happy and wanted Giddish back.
For at least a short time, Hargitay gets her wish.
Law & Order: SVU Bringing Back Rollins
Kelli Giddish joined the Law & Order: SVU cast in Season 13 as Amanda Rollins, where she stayed until Season 24. At that point, the franchise decided to let her go in a cost-cutting measure. This didn’t make the longest-running SVU star Mariska Hargitay happy.
“Kelli is my favorite actor to work with. Kelli is my heart. It’s a sore subject. I have a lot of say on the show, but I didn’t have enough there,” Mariska said about the departure.
Giddish was also disappointed. She said she joined SVU in her 20s and has played the character for three decades of her life, as she is now in her 40s. “This is a show unlike any other,” the actress said. “Shows don’t last 12 years, much less getting to play a character. With playing someone as multi-faceted as Rollins, I got to play all kinds of different things.”
Hargitay said she doesn’t like not being listened to. She pointed out that Rollins and Olivia offered two powerful women on one show, something rare today. She wants her back. Now, that will happen.
Will Will Rollins Return To Law & Order: SVU?
While Rollins left Law & Order: SVU, she has returned for random appearances since the big exit. This means fans have never had the chance to forget about the character. Now, she is coming back for a little bit longer at least.
SVU showrunner/executive producer David Graziano and executive producer Julie Martin revealed that Giddish will return this season.
“Rollins is definitely coming back to the show,” Martin said (via TV Line). “She’s coming as a guest star, and she’s going to make a bunch of appearances throughout the season.” Graziano added, “We’re really happy about it.”
Amanda was back the last time in May 2024 for one episode, during which she volunteered to help Olivia Benson with a case. Rollins was unemployed at the time, and Olivia told her she wanted her to figure out what she wanted. “I don’t want SVU to be your safety net,” Olivia said.
When Rollins returns this season, she has a new job. She now works for the New York Police Department’s Intelligence Unit.
