Simon Cowell on America's Got Talent

America’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell gave fans another magical Golden Buzzer moment. The AGT judge was inspired by one stage act’s courage to continue on with their show, despite missing half of their team. Here is what unfolded during the most recent episode.

America’s Got Talent Act Receives Simon’s Golden Buzzer

During the September 3 episode of America’s Got Talent, Sebastian and Sonia were set to take the stage. The duo is from Barcelona, Spain, and performs aerial shows. However, Sonia hurt her arm while they were rehearsing. She was unable to execute her part of the act.

In a courageous move, Sebastian took the stage alone and carried out a solo routine to the song “In My Blood” by Shawn Mendes. As he performed, the AGT crowd got to their feet, giving him a standing ovation for his amazing act.

Sonia joined him on stage after he finished his performance. The couple kissed before they waited for the judge’s verdict. Simon Cowell surprised everyone when he praised Sebastian for his one-man show.

“A lot of people would have given up,”  he said. Then asked, “How do you do this act with two people with one person and then make it incredible?”

Simon continued, stating that he thought most people would have dropped out of the competition if they faced the same issue. “But you did the opposite, you continued,” he offered praise to Sebastian.

Fans in the audience started to cheer louder and Simon Cowell pointed out that it was the “best reaction” they’ve seen so far this season. Then he leaned forward and pressed the Golden Buzzer. The AGT judge made his way up to the stage to hug Sebastian and Sonia.

Why Did Simon Cowell Give Sebastian The Golden Buzzer?

America’s Got Talent host Terry Crews asked Sebastian how he was feeling after receiving the coveted Golden Buzzer. He said, “Right now we feel like everything was worth it. It was a really hard day, I only had three days to [put together] this act and I just [wanted to do] the best as I could.”

Terry then asked Simon why he decided to press the Golden Buzzer for Sebastian’s act. “That is the definition of courage. You don’t give up, seriously,” he said. Then, he revealed that he checked to make sure Sonia would be alright for the final. “And she said yes, so that was really the best by far tonight,” he concluded.

Sebastian and Sonia will head straight to the AGT finals along with AIRFOOTWORKS, who received the Golden Buzzer last week from Howie Mandel.

As fans know, this season of America’s Got Talent has more Golden Buzzer moments than ever before. Each of the four judges will have the opportunity to hit the Golden Buzzer and send performers to the finals during live shows. All of the AGT judges will have their own Live Show week where they’ll get to choose a performance to receive the Golden Buzzer during quarterfinals.

Following the quarterfinals, 12 stage acts will move on to the semifinals. The six acts that move on from there will join the four Live Golden Buzzer acts in the two-night finale, airing September 17 and 24.

New episodes of America’s Got Talent air on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
