Matthew Perry Doctor Agrees To Guilty Plea, What Is Next?
There has been a big move in the cases surrounding Matthew Perry’s death. With five people arrested, the first of the doctors have pleaded guilty. While the news broke that Dr. Mark Chavez agreed to plead guilty, he reportedly did so on Friday, August 30.
Here is what you need to know about Chavez and his guilty plea in the case.
Doctor Pleads Guilty In Matthew Perry Death Case
There were two doctors arrested in conjunction with Mattew Perry’s death. One allegedly supplied Perry with illegal amounts of ketamine. The other got the ketamine originally and supplied it to the doctor dealing with Perry. The one who originally got the ketamine has pleaded guilty.
Doctor Salvador Plasencia is who reportedly sold the ketamine to Perry. He has pleaded not guilty. However, Dr. Mark Chavez of San Diego is who got the ketamine to Plasencia. He agreed to supply all evidence requested voluntarily, including correspondence, documents, and any records he has in his possession.
Now, it seems that he has done just that.
“Chavez has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and has signed a plea agreement,” said the U.S. attorney’s office in a statement (via ABC). Chavez appeared in court on Friday and gave up both his medical license and passport.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jean P. Rosenbluth told him he could remain free on bond with several restrictions, including turning over his passport and not working as a doctor. However, he did not enter his guilty plea or speak about the case but agreed to do so at a later date.
If found guilty, Chavez could face up to 10 years in prison.
Dr. Chazez Third Person To Plead Guilty
Dr. Mark Chavez is the third person to plead guilty so far. The other two people to plead guilty were Matthew Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who helped buy the ketamine for Perry and injected the actor with it, and Eric Fleming, a middleman who helped make the connections.
However, the two biggest names have pleaded not guilty. This includes Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who is actually still practicing medicine as he awaits his trial. With Chavez turning over evidence, it is unclear if Plasencia will maintain his not-guilty plea.
Also pleading not guilty is Jasveen Sangha, also known as “The Ketamine Queen.” She faces the harshest penalties and remains in jail with no chance for a bail. The judge considers her a flight risk.
