Peacock released the new documentary Gary, which details the life and death of former child star Gary Coleman. The actor became a superstar thanks to his role in Diff’rent Strokes, but he also suffered through severe medical issues and died relatively young. The documentary looks at his troubled life and his controversial death.

Here is what we learned after watching the Gary Coleman documentary on Peacock.

Gary Coleman’s Lifetime Health Problems

Gary Coleman was born with a congenital kidney defect. When he was five, Gary received a transplant, but by the time he was 17, his body had already “absorbed” his kidney. He started dialysis on December 31, 1985, and had no working kidney in his body.

In the documentary, an archive interview with Coleman saw him say he had a “never say die” attitude since he was five. This was important since he lived with dialysis, and the lack of a kidney stunted his growth at 4 feet and 8 inches.

“I can recall showing up to set one day and Gary was in the middle of the scene, completed the scene, bent over and threw up,” his former manager Dion Mial said. “He fundamentally never knew what it was to be fully healthy.”

Things were worse thanks to his home life.

Gary’s Family Stole His Money

Gary Coleman ended up estranged from his family and business team when he allegedly learned they were stealing money from his bank accounts. Dion Mial said he told Gary to be weary of his business team. In another archive video, Gary said he looked into his finances and fired everyone.

“I’m sick of all of you people, I don’t want to hear from any of you people,” Gary said about them at the time. “I want accounting; I want it now.” His parents said they did nothing wrong and they were protecting Gary’s money. His father called Mial a “demon.”

His parents tried to get a conservatorship but failed. Gary ended up gaining control of his finances. His attorney said Gary’s parents tried to shift his money into their investments, but all the investments failed.

Was Gary Coleman’s Ex-Wife Involved In His Death?

The documentary also focused on Gary’s death. Gary Coleman died on May 28, 2010, following bleeding in his brain. He was allegedly roommates with his ex-wife, Shannon Price. She was there when she claimed she heard a “big loud boom.”

Price said she found Gary lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor. The 911 call shows her refusing to listen to the operator’s instructions on how to help him. Rather than help him, she kept saying she was “gagging” because she had his blood on her. When the operator asked her to help him, she said, “I’m not trying to. He’s not with it.”

Two days later, Price took Coleman off life support, and he died.

His friend Anna Gray claims that Gary had an advanced directive, and she said, “He wanted at least two weeks of care before any plugs were pulled, so I don’t understand why anyone would pull the plug two days later.” She said she does “not think that he fell,” but she couldn’t say anything more.
