Matt Bomer has deemed his new Hulu sitcom, Mid-Century Modern, the “spiritual cousin” to The Golden Girls. Initially branded a reboot of the hit eighties series that ran for seven seasons, Matt is clearing up the misconceptions. So, what will differentiate his show yet what are the similarities that cannot be ignored? Keep reading for more details.

Matt Bomer’s New Hulu Sitcom ‘Spiritual Cousin’ Of The Golden Girls

Despite having gone off the air over thirty years ago, The Golden Girls is an iconic sitcom that still lives on today. There are pop-ups, endless merchandise, marathons, cosplay, and so much more. The four ladies (Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy, and Rose) live on because they are quirky, spunky, relatable, and have so much sass. For years, diehard fans have hoped that maybe the show would get a second life. In some way, Sex and the City did that with younger women but it was not quite the same. The Golden Girls walked so Sarah Jessica Parker could run.

Then, it was announced that Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer would be doing a gay version of The Golden Girls. It was entitled Mid-Century Modern and was being filmed for Hulu. However, it was not quite the same premise and anyone who read the synopsis could see the variations:

“The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

Now, TGG followed widow Blanche Devereaux who had a home in Miami. Rose Nylund moved there from Minnesota after her husband passed and ended up renting a room in Blanche’s home. Dorothy Zbornak was divorced and also rented a room while she brought her mother, widow Sophia Petrillo from the retirement home, Shady Pines. This synopsis is clearly different but the “chosen family” rings true.

Speaking of Mid-Century Modern, Matt Bomer shared this with People:

“Some of the circumstances are similar with this group of people, who have decided for a certain chapter in their life, they’re going to live together. There are some nods to not only Golden Girls, but some other characters from past shows which I grew up loving. So it’s sort of a hybrid, but I would definitely say it’s a spiritual cousin.”

Who Matt Plays In The Show

Matt Bomer’s character is definitely a fun and out-of-the-box one. He plays Jerry Frank who was in the Mormon Church but left that, as well as his wife. Jerry did so after his wife let him and the Church know he was gay. He notes his character has elements of Betty White’s Rose Nylund as well as Woody Harrelson’s Woody Boyd from Cheers. Finally, there’s a touch of All in the Family’s Edith Bunker to round it out. Ryan Murphy, of American Horror Story fame is a part of this project along with Max Mutchnik from Will & Grace so it is bound to be filled with the most impeccable talent. Linda Lavin also will round out the cast.
