Kevin Costner put millions into making his Western Horizon and its direct sequel. He also had plans to start filming other chapters in the movie’s shared universe. However, unfortunately for Costner, audiences didn’t show up to see his film, and it looks like his franchise died before it could get moving.

Here is what you need to know about Horizon bombing and why it likely ruined Costner’s chance at his franchise dreams.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon Flopped At The Box Office

Kevin Costner’s epic Western Horizon flopped at the box office. After the disappointing box office, the studio indefinitely delayed the release of the already-filmed sequel. However, there is even worse news now. It sounds like the rest of his sequels have already been canceled.

Horizon was released in theaters on June 27, 2024. During its opening weekend, it opened in third place with $11.0 million at the box office. Inside Out took first in its third week with $57.5 million, and A Quiet Place: Day One was second with $52.2 million. People went to theaters; they didn’t go see Horizon.

In its second weekend, it dropped to sixth place, only making $5.3 million for a running total of $22.07 million. New movies Despicable Me 4 (1st) and MaXXXine (4th) opened ahead of it, while Inside Out 2 made more in its fourth weekend in theaters ($30.3 million) than Horizon made in two weeks combined.

Kevon Costner’s Horizon Franchise Canceled?

New Line Cinema canceled the upcoming release of Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2. It was supposed to hit theaters on August 16, but that has been postponed indefinitely. According to the news, the studio claims it wants to let audiences discover the first movie before releasing the second one.

It sounds like an excuse, but it might be better to see if people discover it when the new movie rush slows down. There is also a good chance that they hold onto it until the first movie hits home video and streaming, and hope it finds a new audience then that might finally come to theaters to see the next chapter.

However, there is another problem. Kevin Costner had plans to start shooting the third movie soon. However, with the first movie bombing and the second now put on hold, the next movie’s production was also canceled. This has also pushed up other things, such as its release on premium video on demand next Tuesday, and it will hit Max in the near future.

New Line Cinema has also asked that theaters expand the window and keep it in theaters longer than usual to help them when they finally release the second movie (via USA Today).

  1. I think HORIZON is brilliant. It’s a pity so many people are saying, “Oh, I’ll just stream it,” as a Western needs to be seen on the big screen. They’re missing out on the grandeur and splendor of the film. Everything about this movie is done to perfection.

    1. I thought the “Horizon” Movie was Really Good
And I would watch it again…..I am 74 and I have always loved western movies……Its a great movie and Kevin Costner is a Great actor ….

  2. The elephant in the room is why people are staying away?
I think that the pile on by woke left-leaning critics is to blame. They stood in Cannes and applauded for eleven minutes and then crawled back to their desks, turned out the lights, and lit into someone they thought had had enough success in his life and should be punished for portraying strong men supported in all things by even stronger women.
How dare he depict American history with accuracy? Didn’t he get the memo?
