Kelly Clarkson returned to the past in a classic American Idol song performance. NBC wants people to remember that moment as the network’s website posted a video of the amazing performance. What makes it so amazing is that Clarkson performed the exact same song for her Idol audition a decade earlier.

Here is a look at that amazing Kelly Clarkson moment and how it compares to the first time she sang the Etta James classic.

Kelly Clarkson Hits Highs With Etta James Classic

Kelly Clarkson auditioned for American Idol in 2002, the show’s first season. While the singers in that first season weren’t all that good, and the production values were low, Kelly was a highlight and went on to become one of the most successful Idol alumni in history.

In the audition for American Idol, Kelly sang a Madonna song and a Glenn Miller song. However, she also sang an Etta James classic called “At Last.” She actually sang it a cappella at the time. The judges saw her talent and received a “golden ticket” to move on. She ended up winning it all, and the rest is history.

In 2015, Kelly Clarkson made a special appearance on American Idol as a guest. She performed a different rendition of Etta James’s “At Last.” This time, she had the music and hit some notes that amazed fans with her vocal range. Kelly took 14 seconds to sing the last line of “For you are mine at last.”

Fans praised the performance. Some even want to hear her sing it again in Kellyoke on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

  • “Kelly Has Always Had A Great Voice!!!”
  • “Kelly amazing do a repeat on your show”
  • “Excellent job! Her voice is so smooth. I am sure Etta is smiling.”

Kelly Clarkson Won’t Judge On American Idol

While fans want to see Kelly Clarkson sing the Etta James song again now to see how much her voice has kept improving, many also want to see her back on American Idol. The show needs a replacement for Katy Perry, and Kelly has the experience.

However, while Kelly got her start on American Idol and coached on The Voice, she won’t be coming to replace Katy. When asked about the possibility, Kelly said she wouldn’t accept the job if offered to her. She left The Voice because she wanted to devote more time to her kids.

“No. I can’t do that, only because I promised my kids,” Kelly said. “I was like, ‘I wanna be there as much as I possibly can.’ And it would put me in L.A.” She still does her talk show, but for something like The Voice or American Idol, Kelly said it wasn’t in the cards.
