Celine Dion’s Sons Devastated, Fear Mom Will Die
Before Celine Dion shared her story with the world, she had to figure out a way to tell her family members about the devastating news.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke categorizes Stiff-Person Syndrome as rare. It currently doesn’t have a cure and can cause painful spasms and even inhibit a patient’s ability to walk and move.
As Celine Dion adjusted to her new life, she also knew she had to find a way to tell her three sons. Since they previously lost their father in 2016, they worried that they would lose their mother as well.
Keep reading to see what she told her sons to help them understand.
Celine Dion Struggled To Tell Her Sons About Her Health
Canadian singer Celine Dion publicly told the world about her Stiff-Person Syndrome diagnosis in 2022. But the sad truth was that she struggled with the symptoms for years before that.
According to PEOPLE, she “had been battling mysterious health struggles beginning in the mid-2000s, her symptoms (including excruciating muscle spasms, difficulty walking and breathing) dramatically worsened in the years ahead of her SPS diagnosis.”
Naturally, it completely terrified her family. Celine’s husband Rene Angelil died from throat cancer in 2016. They share three sons: 23-year-old Rene-Charles and 13-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy.
After losing her husband, the singer did her best to explain her condition to her sons without frightening them. The boys already knew something was wrong and they were afraid of losing their mother as well.
“I barely could walk at one point, and I was missing very much living. My kids started to notice. … ‘OK, they already lost a parent. I don’t want them to be scared,'” the 56-year-old singer shared with PEOPLE. “I let them know, ‘You lost your dad, [but] mom has a condition and it’s different. I’m not going to die. It’s something that I’m going to learn to live with.”
Fans Can’t Wait To Hear The Singer Tell Her Story In New Doc
After taking some time to focus on her health, the Canadian singer is ready to speak up about her diagnosis. The documentary I Am: Celine Dion comes out soon and explores her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome.
More than anything, she wants to be well enough to return to the stage someday and reconnect with her fans.
“I miss it so much. The people, I miss them,” Celine Dion announces in the trailer. “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl … I won’t stop.”
