Sofia Vergara Blames ‘Cocaine Godmother’ For Divorce
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello divorced after separating in July 2023. Joe filed for divorce from Sofia, and Sofia cited a couple of reasons for the divorce. First, she said they had different outlooks on having children. Second, she blamed a miniseries she was shooting at the time.

Sofia Vergara Says ‘Cocaine Godmother’ Contributed To Divorce
In early 2022, Sofia Vergara took on a very different role than she is used to. Instead of her usual lightweight comedic roles, she played a mafia queen in Griselda. In the movie, she played Griselda Blanco, a real-life Colombian drug dealer known as the Cocaine Godmother who operated in Miami from the 1970s through the early 2000s.
Griselda is a Netflix original miniseries in which Vergara plays the crime boss. She shot the movie in Los Angeles in early 2022. At the time, she and Joe Manganiello were still married and on good terms together. According to Sofia, she barely slept in her own bed while filming the movie and couldn’t even relax after long days of being in character.
One year later, Joe filed for divorce, listing the date of separation as July 2, 2023. Last Sunday, the Netflix FYSEE event held A Conversation With Sofia Vergara, and she spoke about the toll the role took on her life (via The US Sun).
“It was amazing, but I did [think] at the beginning that something bad was happening to me,” she said about shooting the miniseries. “[In a] comedy, you go home happy, you spend your day happy. This is another thing.” She said she would be killing people, screaming all day, cutting someone’s head off, or doing cocaine in the miniseries.
“I would go home, and then I’m like, and now what?”
How Griselda Affected Sofia Vergara Marriage
“I wasn’t around much people because I was working. I was like in every single scene, so I would go home… but now that I think about it, I got a divorce,” she said. The crowd laughed, but Sofia Vergara explained what she meant.
She said she didn’t know something was wrong or what was happening to her. She started taking something to help her sleep (legally). She said she was still shooting in Los Angeles, where she lived, but stayed a lot in a little motel in Long Beach. She said, “The distances and the turnaround, it was crazy.”
With that said, there was one other reason for the divorce. “My husband was younger; he wanted to have kids, and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby.”
