‘Greys Anatomy’ Season 21: Everything You Need To Know
With Grey’s Anatomy ending Season 20, fans are looking ahead to see what might be next. There is some good news. The show will return for another season. However, there will be some changes. The network demanded budget cuts. This means some characters will leave. It also might mean a shorter season.
Here is what is known about Grey’s Anatomy Season 21.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Renewed With Budget Cuts
ABC renewed the hit medical drama for Season 21. This is not surprising because it remains one of ABC’s most popular television shows. While the viewing numbers are not as high as before, ABC knows the series’ value. However, there will be some big changes.
There is no word on when Grey’s will end, but for now, there will be another season. However, it will come with budget cuts, which means that several characters will be forced to leave the show. Other actors were asked to rework their contracts, possibly meaning a shorter season might be coming.
The show has typically between 17 and 27 episodes in a season. However, there is no word on whether the new season will be shorter, possibly opening the door for more new shows that ABC can test out as replacements.
Grey’s Anatomy Facing Major Changes
Significant changes are coming for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21. For one thing, the show has lost its time slot. A rookie show by Ryan Murphy called Doctor Odyssey will replace it on Thursday nights at 10/9c on ABC. This is another medical drama, and it seems like ABC is looking for Grey’s replacement.
However, series creator Shonda Rhimes said moving the show shouldn’t hurt its viewership. “The loyalty and love of Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful,” she said (via THR).
Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt) and Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda) will both leave the series in Season 21. The two are expected to return for a limited number of episodes in the new season to finish off their stories. Schmitt joined the show in Season 13 and was the first gay male regular character on the series.
Yasuda joined the cast in Season 19 as part of a new cast of interns. There might be another change as Ellen Pompeo was not back as a regular character for the first time. With budget cuts, don’t expect to see much of Meredith Grey in Season 21.
The show will continue to air on ABC and be available to stream the next day on Hulu.
