‘The Voice’ Coaches Explain Show’s Popularity
The Voice is in its 25th season and the coaches believe they know what makes it still popular all these years later. While television ratings have dropped, that has happened across all of television. The Voice‘s ratings remain relatively strong compared to the rest of the television landscape.
Here is why The Voice coaches feel the show remains strong 25 seasons since its start
What Caused The Voice‘s Success?
The Voice has been on the air for 13 years and 25 seasons. As a comparison, Fox canceled American Idol after 15 seasons. Since moving to ABC, it is now in its 22nd season. The Voice has had more seasons than one of the most popular singing competition shows in history. It also easily outlasted a similar show in The X Factor, which only lasted three seasons in the United States.
Carson Daly said the show knew the competition was strong because American Idol was still going strong on Fox when The Voice premiered (via Yahoo). He said the marketplace had a lot of singing competition shows on TV and they had to be different. He also said it was a gamble because there was such a glut of similar shows. They thought it would last one season.
However, producer Audrey Morrissey said The Voice outlasted shows like The X Factor and even the original version of American Idol because it was different. She said fans love the coaches, the banter between them as they compete, and the jokes. She said the coaches compete for teams from the start and fans always want to cheer on an underdog.
The Voice Coaches Explain Show’s Popularity
The first three seasons of The Voice had four coaches including Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and CeeLo Green. However, unlike shows like American Idol, the coach’s chairs constantly changed – except for Blake Shelton who stayed on the show for over 20 seasons. That change is also something that keeps The Voice fresh.
John Legend is one of the coaches who has been around longer than most others. According to the hit-making coach, he said the blind auditions is one thing that stands out. It makes The Voice different from American Idol because the coaches can’t see the singer and only base it on the voice. Plus, the singer gets to pick their coach. “It was such a cool way to experience listening to a singer by not looking at them and really focusing on what they sound like,” Legend said.
Gwen Stefani is not on the show right now, taking a season off. However, she has been on the show for seven seasons and she agrees with the reasons the show remains popular. “You connect with the person onstage purely because of their voice and how it moves you and the connection you feel that makes you hit your button and turn around,” she said.
The Voice Has Never Changed
Shows like America’s Got Talent and even American Idol have changed throughout the years. However, The Voice Season 25 is the same show it was in Season 1. This is something that keeps fans coming back. It also lures judges back as well.
Carson Daly admitted there were small things they added after the first season. This includes the steals, saves, and blocks. Outside of the small format changes, the show remains mostly the same. “The format is so strong — stronger than any one coach, any one host, any one of us,” Carson said. “We’ve tweaked the format to make it more interesting, but we’ve never changed the real DNA of the show.”
