Maks Chmerkovskiy Reveals Why He Chose ‘SYTYCD’
For years, Maks Chmerkovskiy was a well-known face on the Dancing With The Stars stage. Although he’s moved on to other projects, fans can still catch his family members on the show: his wife Peta Murgatroyd as well as his younger brother Val Chmerkovskiy and sister-in-law Jenna Johnson.
Maks’ latest project is judging So You Think You Can Dance this season. The popular competition show spawned many professional dancers, including DWTS pros Jenna Johnson, Alan Bersten, and more.
But why exactly did Maks Chmerkovskiy make the switch? Keep reading to see what he had to say on the subject.
Maks Chmerkovskiy Is Eager To Encourage Young Dancers
In previous interviews, Maks Chmerkovskiy said he can’t wait to encourage young dancers. Part of the excitement of So You Think You Can Dance is discovering young talent and helping them advance their career.
“I want to be a part of a platform that produces dance talent moving forward,” Maks shared with Parade in a new interview. “Where I can say, ‘Hey, I was part of that selection,’ and hopefully, this stays and lasts 10 years from now, and I’m looking back at somebody who I commented on as a dancer who’s now a megastar.”
And there will be some changes to the show’s format this year. Parade shares that each week, the contestants will have to compete in challenges that relate to the world of professional dancing. These challenges range from music videos to halftime shows. And Maks Chmerkovskiy couldn’t be happier about the changes.

“One of the negatives in latter seasons of So You Think You Can Dance, in my opinion, was that the show was becoming about the choreographers and not the performers,” the 44-year-old continued. “And so, for me, the focus now is going to be solely on the participants, their stories, their processes, and choreographers are going to come in more of letting them know how to do this better and not like, ‘Look at me, this is who I am and this is what I’m about.’”
SYTYCD Is Getting A Fresh New Look This Year
Previously, Maks hinted that he might like to judge Dancing With The Stars someday. However, he seems pretty content with his role on SYTYCD. All the fresh changes enticed the Ukrainian dancer to join the program.
“There are successful people that So You Think You Can Dance produced, and that’s why the project is coming back,” Maks shared with Parade. “The show is going to have new energy because it’s going to be very, very fresh. Everybody’s new on the production side, and I know them from their having produced from Dancing With The Stars to other dance projects around the medium in the past 10-15 years. And so, I’m just excited to be part of that production that way, this time.”
