NCIS: Origins Is The First Series Prequel

Over the years, NCIS has had a cornucopia of spinoffs including Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawaii. In addition, this fall they premiered their first international series, Sydney. Now, CBS has announced the first prequel. This new series is called NCIS: Origins. According to Deadline, this prequel series is going to focus on young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

This series will take place in 1991, well before the OG series era. Here, Gibbs is a “newly minted special agent.”  He works under Mike Franks at NCIS Camp Pendleton. Mark Harmon will be narrating this series, similar to Jim Parsons narrating Young Sheldon.

However, they have not yet cast the role of the lead.

In addition, this series will premiere in fall 2024.

Sean Harmon Came Up With CBS Series Prequel Idea

Over the years, only two people have played Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Those two actors are Mark Harmon and his son Sean Harmon. Now, Sean had this idea to explore Gibbs’ early NCIS years. Therefore, he and Mark teamed up with two longtime writer-producers, Gina Lucita Monreal, and David J. North to create this series. Both father and son are also executive producers of this prequel. Mark continues to be an executive producer for the OG.

Sean Harmon explained how this came about and why this series was so important to him.

The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself. I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into producing role alongside Gina, David, and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character.

As for the two writers, Monreal and North, they reveal that there are plenty of stories that are new to fans of the long-running CBS series.

This is really the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover that they don’t know the whole story.

Sounds like they have some good stories planned.
