Dancing With The Stars spent a lot of time hyping up Taylor Swift Night. But just a few minutes in, it became immediately apparent to Swifties that the night was going to be underwhelming, to say the least.

Despite promoting Taylor Swift Night so heavily onscreen and on social media, DWTS didn’t even buy the rights to play the singer’s recorded music.

Taylor Swift is currently one of the most iconic pop singers worldwide, so it makes sense that DWTS would want to have a tribute night to her. But now, Swifties can’t help but wonder what the executive team members were thinking.

When DWTS first announced Taylor Swift Night, they also teased that there would be several Easter Eggs in store for the evening. The exec team kept the night’s routines under wraps up until the moment of the performance.

And that’s when fans quickly realized that the songs were going to be all covers instead of Taylor Swift’s actual recordings.

Actress Alyson Hannigan and her partner Sasha Farber kicked the night off with a Cha-cha-cha to “You Belong With Me.” Fans thought the song was a very odd choice for that style of dance. But on top of that, many Swifties were sorely disappointed that Dancing With The Stars would choose covers instead of paying Taylor for the rights to use her music.

Overall, DWTS fans weren’t overly impressed with Sasha and Alyson’s routine and neither were the judges. They earned a 29/40 for the number.

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, fans also expressed their disappointment. They also made it clear that they didn’t appreciate the bait-and-switch. Dancing With The Stars promised a Taylor Swift Night, so it seemed odd to many they wouldn’t play recordings of her songs.

The show typically uses a live band for performances

Dancing With The Stars generally does use a live band for the performances. They’re not always so easy to see onscreen, but it’s a standard part of the show.

However, most Swifties feel that the show promoted the Taylor Swift episode so heavily that it didn’t make sense for them to use a live band this time.
