Bachelor Nation fans have praised The Golden Bachelor spinoff for refreshing the franchise with wholesome content. Gerry Turner agrees there are changes needed within the Bachelor franchise. Keep reading to see what he has to say about the popular reality series.
Gerry Turner Reveals Why He Agreed To Do Golden Bachelor After Initially Rejecting It
If you watch any of The Bachelor shows on ABC, you likely saw a casting call for a senior dating show over the years. The idea finally gained traction in 2020, only to be put on hold due to the pandemic.
But in early 2023, the network revealed that not only was the senior dating show a go, but they’d found their first Golden Bachelor: Gerry Turner, a then-71-year-old from rural Indiana who tragically lost his wife in 2017.
We just met him, but Gerry Turner deserves the world. I really can’t wait to watch his journey unfold.

The first-ever season of The Golden Bachelor premiered on September 28. Now there is just one episode left in the season. Gerry Turner will hand out his final rose – and possibly propose – during the season finale airing on Thursday, November 30.
He spoke to Esquire recently about his experience on the show. He confirmed that he initially turned producers down when they called. What made him change his mind? The opportunity to see the world.
“The final push was the tantalizing bait of the vacations and exotic travel,” Turner said of what was the deciding factor in accepting the lead role.
His Surprising Skin Care Routine
At the start of the season airing, Gerry Turner was profiled in GQ magazine. He spoke of his exercise routine and how playing pickleball helps keep him fit.
Journalists at Esquire were interested in Turner’s skincare routine, noting that he looks years younger than his age. The retired restauranter revealed that he didn’t have one. “I wash my face with soap and water,” Turner said of his secret to good skin.
He did, however, reveal his hair care tips – “I have a little bit of product that I put in my hair. I’ve found the perfect amount.”
Gerry Turner Discusses Necessary Changes In Bachelor Franchise
Gerry Turner made a surprising revelation in the Esquire interview: He doesn’t like the Bachelor franchise. His daughters, who are avid fans of the show, talked him into watching it.
However, Turner “thought the drama was a bit ridiculous.” Golden Bachelor fans likely knew that, as he quickly squashed drama brewing between contestants Kathy Swarts and Theresa Nist.
He didn’t want any drama on his season. Instead, his goal was to represent his generation in a “much more positive fashion.”
One change he purposely made on The Golden Bachelor was everyone was “courteous to each other, helpful, and supportive.”

Gerry Turner admitted that the senior dating show had one stark difference from the younger version of the show. “Someone in their 20s and 30s has a bit more of a physical component that may be the flagship of the whole deal,” he told Esquire.
The Bachelor returns to the airwaves early next year with Joey Graziadei as the lead. Bachelor Nation fans will have to tune in to see if the younger contestants learned anything from the women of The Golden Bachelor.
Do you agree with Gerry Turner that the franchise needed some changes? Share your thoughts in the comments. Be sure to tune in to ABC on Thursday, November 30 at 8 PM Eastern for the season finale of The Golden Bachelor.
