Coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community is an incredibly powerful and personal journey. Pop singer Jason Mraz is happily exploring this chapter of his life. And much to his own surprise, competing on Dancing With The Stars has dramatically helped with that journey.

The 46-year-old singer just made it through to the semifinals along with his dance partner, Daniella Karagach. Right now, he feels virtually unstoppable and is ready to conquer the world.

As he prepares to compete next week, Jason took some time to open up about coming to terms with being bisexual. Keep reading to see what he had to say.

Jason Mraz learned to accept himself through dance

Singer Jason Mraz is well-known for his many pop hits, including “The Remedy” and “I’m Yours.” However, he admitted he wasn’t much of a dancer before joining Dancing With The Stars. But he decided to take a leap of faith and explore a new chapter of his life.

“I had to play out a lot of other scenarios before I arrived here,” the pop singer shared with GLAAD this week. “It’s both hard to do those and hard to unravel those, and what I’m basically describing is a divorce, you know? And that’s very hard. You carry a lot of shame and guilt.”

“All day, you’re looking at yourself in the mirror, and that can be hard for anybody, any human, to accept themselves looking in the mirror,” Jason explained in the interview. “On top of it, then my partner is asking me to move in ways that I’ve never moved before, and my reaction is, ‘I look silly.'”

He went on to add that once he broke through his personal barriers, he felt much better. Eventually, he gained a sense of confidence.

“Dance is an amazing medium for that transformation and for that accepting of one’s self,” Jason shared.

GLAAD also shares that Jason Mraz was featured on Out magazine’s Out100 list this year, a list of influential members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged,” the singer added.

The singer is preparing for the semifinals at the moment

Since the first week of Dancing With The Stars Season 32, Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach have impressed the audience with their routines. However, fans also noticed the judges have been particularly harsh with the couple in recent weeks.

Even so, Jason has previously stated he’s giving the competition his all and is determined to keep going. But they’ll need more votes from fans to make it to the finale.
