Derek Hough defended his critiques against disgruntled Dancing with the Stars fans. The judge received criticism for giving a disputed score to Jason Mraz, a top contender in the season The U.S. Sun reported. Jason is a frontrunner in the fan vote on ABC’s reality show. However, winning over the professional dance judges has proven to be a separate hurdle for the Lucky singer. Jason and Koko performed “Take On Me” in the latest episode, but some viewers felt Judge Derek underrated the singer with an 8 out of 10 score. Fans booed Derek after giving Jason Mraz a low score. Derek even acknowledged the frustration in a TikTok post, sharing a video featuring a startled and confused-looking dog darting around a picture of his judging, set to the tune of “Popcorn.”

Fans On Derek’s Side

Nevertheless, some have rallied to Derek’s support, contending that the disruptive behavior of the studio audience hinders the judges in carrying out their responsibilities. It’s a familiar scenario on DWTS for the judges to face occasional booing from the audience throughout the season. Judges disagree or booed if the audience misunderstands their critique. Derek Hough praised Lele Pons for her Shakira-inspired dance performance with partner Brandon Armstrong. However, he noted the lifts needed to be executed correctly.

DWTS Jason is A Dancer

Throughout the competition, Jason has consistently held the leading position, capturing the audience’s attention from the very first week. The “I’m Yours” singer surprised fans with flawless cha cha alongside his usual dance partner, Daniella Karagach. Jason’s performance on DWTS received all sevens from the judges. Jason tied for second place with Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov, scoring 21 out of 30. Bruno Tonioli called Jason ‘a dancer.’ Derek Hough chimmed in:

“The best dance of the night. Spot on.”

In a pre-recorded segment, the two-time Grammy winner confessed to having ‘faked his way through dancing over the course of his career. He revealed:

“During my college days, I focused on musical theater. However, there came a moment when I stood at the entrance of the dance studio and decided, ‘I’m not going back in there.’ I was fully aware of what awaited me in that room—humiliation. The other students possessed far more experience than I did, and being in there exposed all my vulnerabilities.”
