WCTH Screenwriter Talks About Elizabeth And The Mountie

Recently, When Calls The Heart screenwriter Derek Thompson was on the Official Hearties Admins YouTube channel. There, he talked about the WCTH Season 10, Episode 8 entitled “What Is And What Never Should Be” because he wrote it.

Firstly, he did not see any issues between Lucas and Elizabeth, citing that other concerns kept the couple separated. This was not strife between them. But, he revealed that Elizabeth had been through a lot of trauma. Her journey is not going to be a straight line. Moreover, he seems to indicate that she is going to surprise fans.

In the interview, Thompson was also asked about Elizabeth and how she had some very close moments with Nathan. Could this mean that she has some tender feelings for the Mountie? The two had spoken of his relationship with Faith. It really never took off, and Nathan wondered out loud if he was meant for love. This led to Elizabeth insisting that he was.

While Team Nathan fans believed that this was proof that she made a mistake, Thompson seemed to say otherwise. “She just had an honest conversation with a friend and neighbor.” But, he saw this as a bigger picture. One of grief. Elizabeth went on a journey of losing her husband. Seeing Nathan reminds her of Jack.

Derek then points out that after this conversation, Elizabeth needs to talk to Jack.

Nathan Still Thinks He Is At Fault For Jack

Hearties got a lot of great insight into WCTH when screenwriter Derek Thompson talked about his episode “What Is And What Never Should Be.” Thompson took a deep dive into that conversation and Nathan’s point of view.

After Nathan leaves, Thompson shares that Nathan is “smiling” because of the friendship he has with Elizabeth. He points out “I think it’s cool that they can remain friends and close.” He revealed Nathan’s thoughts. “In his mind, he’s at fault for Jack, even though it’s not his fault, it was a random thing.”

However, he points out that although Elizabeth cares for all of her friends, there is something more with Nathan. He calls it “that extra level of Mountie.”

Does this sound like Nathan is elevated above everyone else? He did not elaborate much more, but it certainly does.

  1. I want Elizabeth to end up with Nathan. The relationship seems to be forced with Lucas and Little Jack. Lucas doesn’t seem like he wants to be a father. And I hate how Lucas always shuts Elizabeth down. She was trying to find out information about the new student and his “step father”.

    1. I agree. I do not like the chemistry with Lucas. I love the chemistry with Nathan and Elizabeth! We need to see Elizabeth with the mountie as in the books!

  2. Love this show so so much- so clean, so full of values and morals and old fashioned respect this country has seemed to have wandered from. Both my husband and I watch, and it spands generations- I can’t lie though, I really don’t like Elizabeth with Lucas and I hope she is having jitters and I hope you guys do the most shocking twist and send her back to Nathan but no matter what I’m never leaving!!💖💖💖💖💖💖🙏🏻

  3. I love the Elizabeth character too much to see her end up with Nathan and I prefer to see the season end with her wedding to Lucas and having a happy ever after life. She can love Nathan as a friend. While I understand it would be tantalizing for the writers to go with the drama of the love triangle again and have a great cliff hanger for end of season, in my opinion that would be risky. I’m sure I’m not the only one sick and tired of Elizabeth’s travails. I would seriously consider not watching the show any longer and many others might agree. It would be too hard to see her living the life of a Mountie wife again and I think whatever she feels for Nathan is far different than the love she has for Lucas. She and little Jack will have a much better life with Lucas, and they are good together.

  4. I am sorry but I don’t like the turn that this show has taken. Why can’t they just have let this season have been a happy time with a baby being born and a wedding being planned and carried out. The end of season 9 was great.. should have followed through with that. I can’t say I will stand behind Elizabeth.. fickle is what I see. Hurting someone like Lucas will turn me all the way against her. He has expressed his feelings for her straight from his heart.. can’t stand to see Elizabeth break his heart..!!!! No I can’t stand behind her!!! Will I watch season 11… probably not…😡

  5. this season has been different from other seasons. it seems that Lucas isn’t interested in being a family man like he was last season, playing with Jack and all. and I know that Nathan still thinks he is to blame for Elizabeth’s late husband ‘s death, but he will find love. just have to be patient with Elizabeth. whatever happens at the end, I will stay with Elizabeth and her forever happiness.

  6. I haven’t watched since the end of Season 8. I was so disappointed that Nathan never had a chance. I am now watching again since I heard of WCTH had new writers. I always loved Nathan and Elizabeth. never could see any of them with anyone else after seeing them together ❤️. so much chemistry. I hope I’m not disappointed again.

  7. I will be very sad if Elizabeth doesn’t “come to her senses” and stay with Lucas. It’s not that I don’t like Nathan – I just see more romance with the Elizabeth/Lucas courtship. I am hoping that she will realize that her attraction is not with Nathan – just the Mountie connection with her late husband. If she dumps Lucas, I have a feeling his character will leave the program – as crazy as he is about her, I cannot see him sticking around town.

  8. I just cannot CANNOT with Elizabeth & Nathan. She’s made promises with Nathan & him to her. C’mon writers stay with the family theme of Hope Valley. Don’t let her become fickle at this stage of the game.

  9. Now that the season is over you said you hoped the viewers would support Elizabeth. Actually she was planning the wedding with Lucas for most of the season and then dumps him when he needs her support the most. The whole greater stage and the race were just totally made up storylines this year to drive a wedge between them. He sacrificed the life he always wanted to save everyone else and they desert him. In an emotional scene Elizabeth says she chose Lucas because it felt comfortable, secure and safe. is that a bad thing? So is it better to have a life with a Mountie that is uncomfortable, insecure, and unsafe? Doesn’t make sense. This year Elizabeth seems too needy and dependent on Rosemary who is having her own issues. She has enabled Elizabeth’s doubt and regression for her own selfish reasons. To answer your question no I don’t understand this Elizabeth 2.0 and hope next season we see the old confident, caring, reasonable and fierce Elizabeth that I admired. She would never have hurt Lucas in such a cold manner.
