During an interview with TODAY‘s host Hoda Kotb, Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’ wife, gave a sad update on her husband. She became tearful while talking about his battle with dementia.

Bruce Willis’ Health Problems

Sadly, Bruce Willis’ family announced in March 2022 his battle with aphasia. Unfortunately, this condition is impacting his cognitive abilities. Later, in February 2023, Rumer Willis, his daughter, updated that his condition was worse. At that point, they understood his diagnosis was frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In brief, this rare form of the disease causes a deterioration in behavior, personality, and language.

Heartbreaking Family Disease

Emma Heming emotionally shared about Bruce’s condition on the Today show. Given that, she opened up about being his caregiver. Emma refers to herself as Bruce’s “care partner.”  She also emphasized how important it is to care for herself as well. “What I’m learning is that dementia is hard. It’s hard on the person diagnosed, it’s also hard on the family,” she told Hoda Kotb. “And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say this is a family disease, it really is.” Emma explained, “The most important thing was to be able for us to say what the disease was, explain what it is.”

“When you know what the disease is from a medical standpoint it sort of all makes sense,” she continued. In reference to their daughters, she said, “So it was important that we let them know what it is because I don’t want there to be any stigma or shame attached to their dad’s diagnosis or for any form of dementia.”

Is Bruce Willis Aware Of What Is Happening?

Following up, Hoda asked, “Does he know what’s going on? Is that something he’s aware of?” Gently, Emma responded, “Hard to know.”  She discussed coming to terms with Bruce’s devastating diagnosis. Expressing her acceptance she said, “I think it was the blessing and the curse. You know, to sort of finally understand what was happening so that I can be into the acceptance of what is.” While it is still extremely painful, she shares having some answers has made it a little bit easier. And she gave insight into how she moves through it, “There are so many beautiful things happening in our lives. It is just really important for me to look up from the grief and the sadness so that I can see what is happening around us.”

What Is Bruce Willis Teaching The Family?

Hoda poses a hard question by asking Emma what she thinks Bruce is teaching their girls through his illness. Emma Heming replied, “Honestly, he is the gift that keeps on giving. Love, patience, resilience, so much…” Also reflecting, “And he’s teaching me and our whole… I mean, you know, for me to be out here doing this, this is not my comfort zone, but this is the power of Bruce.” Emma is using her knowledge to inform about World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week.

Hoda said, “I have heard from people that have an ailing family member, and I remember this from a friend of mine.” She continued explaining they believed the diagnosis made their kids better people. Hoda prompted, “Is that what you’re noticing?” Emma replied: “That is what I’m noticing. Listen, I think my kids would be great no matter what!” Clarifying, “And this is not what I would want for them. But really, like I said, it is teaching them so much and how to care and love and it’s a beautiful thing amongst the sadness.”
