Will one DWTS Season 32 participant drop out early?

That’s the latest rumor circling around. The premiere date is just under a week away and the participating couples have been rehearsing for a while now.

But with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the situation is getting a little bit complicated. What exactly is going on and who may need to drop out?

Strikers are livid about DWTS continuing as scheduled

Up until now, many didn’t expect protestors to go after Dancing With The Stars. Most reality competitions are exempt from the ongoing strikes. However, the narrative is a little different now.

Deadline reported that about 25 picketers protested outside the DWTS rehearsal studio on Wednesday. Many felt unhappy that SAG-AFTRA members such as Alyson Hannigan and Mira Sorvino were participating in the competition. Comedian Matt Walsh is also a member of WGA.

Reportedly, the situation has escalated to the point where some expect someone to drop out. Many are unhappy that Matt Walsh is participating, even though he isn’t writing. Unless something changes, he will compete with pro dancer Koko Iwasaki.

“The WGA respects all writing whether it’s a single writer on a feature film with 500 people or it’s a single writer on a TV show with 500 people; it’s all the same to us and we’re going to protect writing across the board,” one picketer told Deadline. “Dancing With The Stars is a WGA signatory show. It shouldn’t be shooting right now. ABC has no fall programming, narratively speaking, because they chose to impose this strike upon us so we want to disrupt all of their programming as much as we can so they’ll come back to the table with a reasonable offer.”

With added pressure, it’s entirely possible that Matt Walsh could drop out. Others may follow. At this point, anything could happen.

ABC needs the dance competition to continue

As the picketer pointed out, ABC doesn’t have much to feature on its fall lineup amid the strikes. It’s largely depending on Dancing With The Stars and other unscripted shows to fill its time slots. Deadline reports that the network will also air reruns of hit shows like Abbott Elementary until the strikes end and productions resume.

Until then, it’s likely that DWTS will face a lot of scrutiny and criticism. Some have suggested that the premiere date be postponed until a resolution is reached.
