Moonshiners alum Jim Tom Hedrick, aka Rye Daddy is dead. The long-time moonshine veteran who loved to tell a great story and sing a song has passed away at the age of 82.

Here are the latest details on the death of this beloved Discovery star.

Moonshiners Alum Jim Tom Hedrick Has Died

On Wednesday, the Mark & Digger Shiners Club Facebook page shared the news. “Prayers for our buddy Jim Tom’s family, he passed this morning! I’m sure he’s catching up with Roy!” That means the 82-year-old Moonshiners star passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

The post mentions another star of the series, alum, Roy L. Grooms, who passed away on February 21, 2018.

Jim Tom Hedrick Last Seen In Hospital

In late August, the same site posted photos of Jim Tom Hedrick in the hospital. The Discovery alum was bare-chested, sitting in his hospital bed. The charmer was photographed holding hands with his visitors, as well as checking out his smartphone.

That post stated “Prayers for our buddy Jim Tom. Praying for comfort and peace! We love you JT!” However, they did not reveal what was ailing the charming Moonshiners star. But, he looked strong and happy to see his adoring friends where he was receiving care.

More About Moonshiners Alum

Moonshiners alum Jim Tom Hedrick was born in North Carolina on Christmas Day, December 25, 1940. He quit school early and wound up doing a cornucopia of jobs including plumbing and electrical work. Those skills certainly helped him become such a talented moonshiner.

Besides being a great storyteller, he was also a ham radio operator, and recorded a few songs including “Golly That’s Good.” Sometime after this, Rye Daddy started to moonshine. And he got good at it. He became famous for moonshining rye liquor in a copper still. In those iconic stills, he made white lightning.

Therefore, when he started on Discovery’s Moonshiners in November 2012, he was the full package. He was so entertaining. Jim Tom captivated the audience with his songs, stories, and the whimsical way he was making moonshine. He was the whole package.

Eventually, he stopped moonshining and went legitimate. His Sugarlands Shine includes some iconic libations including Jim Tom’s Signature Moonshine. Even after he left six years ago, he did make a cameo. Jim Tom was so well-liked because of his kindness and willingness to help out everyone. JT took pleasure in teaching others his long-earned skills. There is now a new generation who learned from the very best.
