Does My 600-Lb. Life star Dr. Now struggle with expressing emotions?

Although the world-famous bariatric surgeon is widely beloved by fans, some couldn’t help but notice something about him recently. He doesn’t seem to express his feeling very often on screen.

Many My 600-Lb. Life patients have tragic backgrounds and heartbreaking personal stories. But even so, Dr. Now rarely seems to bat an eye.

So what exactly is going on here?

Dr. Now doesn’t frequently show his feelings unless anger is involved

Plenty of My 600-Lb. Life guests struggle with food addiction as a way to cope with life-altering trauma. Their stories often bring viewers at home to tears.

But no matter what the patients share with him, Dr. Now seems completely unphased.

“Does Dr. Now ever express emotions of any kind on the show?” a Redditor wondered on the platform this week. “Re-watching a bunch of episodes and no matter what happens he just seems monotone. I mean I recall the one mother and daughter who had all the dogs and their husband/father passed while they were in Texas, no emotion. Patients dying, no emotion. Has he just become numb to his?”

The OP went on to say that they saw a TikTok the other day where Dr. Now seemed genuinely delighted to interact with a fan. By their observation, the famous bariatric surgeon only really seems cold onscreen.

“His emotions tend to be fairly muted, but they are there. He just seems reserved to me. I’ve seen him happy when patients have done well and are excited to see him,” another My 600-Lb. Life fan chimed in.

They added that Dr. Now certainly expresses anger, as shown when he yelled at Steven Assanti. The bariatric surgeon also gets pretty heated when patients’ family members enable their bad habits.

The physician does seem to have a soft spot for some patients

Dr. Now has practiced medicine for decades. During that time, he’s seen varying degrees of success among his patients. But Reddit users noticed that he always seems excited for the patients that go the distance.

He’s also shown a lot of joy and pride with some of his patients. Justin from Season 10 comes to mind since he made such a [huge] transformation,” one Redditor pointed out.

Others added that the physician also seemed distraught when speaking about patients that ultimately passed away. One Redditor brought up Sean Milliken‘s passing and how the bariatric surgeon reacted.
