Jay Leno Announces When He Plans To Retire
It has been 2014 since Jay Leno left his job as the host of The Jay Leno Show, but despite that, he still hasn’t officially retired from his job as an entertainer yet. However, Leno specified in a recent interview when he might be ready to finally announce his retirement from his various business ventures.
Here is what Leno had to say about retirement and when he might consider it.
Jay Leno on when he will retire
Jay Leno said that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. Even at the age of 73, Leno remains active in his various business and entertainment ventures. Most recently, Leno was on hand to work at the kickoff event for the Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge premiere. This was an event that has a big meaning for Leno, as he is an avid car collector. Leno owns around 286 vehicles, including 169 cars and 117 motorbikes. He also shows these off on a website and TV show called Jay Leno’s Garage.
However, when it comes time for Leno to stop making appearances and working in the entertainment industry, the former talk show host said that time isn’t coming anytime soon. In fact, he said there is only one thing that would convince him to hang it up and officially retire. He told Page Six in an interview that he won’t retire “unless I have a stroke.” He said that is when a person should retire – following “your stroke.”
Until that happens, Leno plans to keep doing what he loves to do, which taking care of his car collection and taking his bikes out for joyrides. He said that his wife Mavis, 76, supports him and his continued joyrides. He said that as long as he isn’t doing cocaine or cheating with other girlfriends, she is okay with what he does for fun. As for Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge, Leno will serve as a celebrity guest judge.
Jay Leno continues to work even after serious accidents
The most impressive thing is that Jay Leno keeps working, even after two recent serious accidents. In November 2022, Leno was working on one of his antique vehicles, which burst into flames in his Los Angeles garage. Leno suffered third-degree burns in the accident. He spent 10 days in the hospital and required two grafting procedures plus time spent in a hyperbaric chamber.
Leno then left the hospital after 10 days and went right back to his garage. One week later, he was back on the stage performing standup for a sold-out crowd. Just two months later, Leno was knocked off his motorcycle and broke his collarbone. He also cracked two kneecaps and broke two ribs. Within days, he was back at work.
