‘Yellowstone’ Star Kevin Costner Is Obsessed With ‘Horizon’
Horizon is Kevin Costner’s obsession. The Yellowstone star recently discussed what he is willing to give up to make his dream project happen. Making this movie has become an epic journey with high-profile slings and arrows.
What is Horizon all about? Also, why does this project matter so much to the Field Of Dreams star?
The biggest surprise of all is that Horizon should be released before the final episodes of Yellowstone. When can fans flock to the theater to see it?
Kevin Costner Is Obsessed With Horizon
Although Kevin Costner’s name has spent a lot of time in entertainment headlines this year, it seems it is for the wrong reasons. His life does not revolve around Yellowstone. There is something that makes Kevin’s heart miss a beat. It is Horizon.
On Thursday, Deadline interviewed “two mavericks,” Frances Ford Coppola, and Kevin Costner. This unlikely pair have something in common. Both are “risking their fortunes” on their current projects.
For Kevin, it is Horizon. This is the story of the American West. Although it is now going to be a four-movie set. The quartet of films encompasses a 15-year span that takes place before the Civil War and into the Western Expansion.
Costner is obsessed with this story. He is infatuated with movies that have classic stories. He reminisced that growing up hunting and fishing, they would gather around the fire at night and listened to “older men talk.” This was when he learned about good storytelling. His philosophy is “Time doesn’t matter if your story is interesting.”
Kevin Costner’s 35-Year Journey Making Horizon
To Kevin, Horizon is a movie with an interesting story. He believes “In the idea and the story.” He is so confident in this story that he “mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house.” After giving his accountant “a f****** conniption,” he admits that he put all his chips in “without a thought.” You can’t get more obsessed than that!
The idea of making Horizon started years ago, even before his most famous epic, Dances With Wolves. Back in 1988, Costner “commissioned” Horizon. This was a single movie. Originally intended as a “conventional Western,” he could not get anyone to make this movie.
About 16 years later, the movie was almost a reality after the success of Open Range. Disney almost made it, but there was a $5 million difference. The movie was not made.
Then, just over a decade ago, Kevin could not forget about this story. Therefore, he started to work with a partner. The result was four scripts and he was pleased. “I thought it was really good. But I couldn’t get anybody to make it.”
Costner Admits ‘I’m Not A Very Good Businessman’
Now, it turns out that Kevin Costner and two “investor friends” are making the epic four-movie Horizon. Moreover, Kevin has admitted that he is taking a big risk. Kevin shared that he is a creative and not a business-minded individual. So, it should not be any surprise that he may question his common sense because he put his own money into making this movie.
But, to him, this story has haunted him for so long that he cannot let it go. So, he let his heart win over his common sense. He is determined to make Horizon.
I’m not a very good businessman, so, scratch your head if you will. I don’t know why, but I have not let go of this one. I’ve pushed it into the middle of the table three times in my career and didn’t blink. This is my fourth.
His revelation indicates that this is the fourth time he has tried to make Horizon. The first film is now halfway through production. But after these four movies, he promises to never do it again.
But now, he must do everything. He has risked it all.
By putting my own money in it, i will chase this movie with my partners the rest of our lives. I can’t put my own money into something and have somebody else in control, because at the end of the day, the money isn’t as important to me as the movie.
But, we still don’t know any story details about this four-movie set.
When Does Horizon Come Out?
The biggest of Kevin Costner’s revelations was that Horizon will come out in the fall. His goal is to take the first movie to the Venice Film Festival. This particular festival runs from August 30, to September 9.
If this movie does show there, it will be before Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 starts filming. Those episodes are expected to premiere in November.

What Kevin Costner Was Willing To Give Up For Horizon
While Deadline would be remiss if they did not ask Kevin Costner about Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, they did not connect the dots. Costner declined to comment on Sheridan.
However, even casual onlookers can now better fill in the blanks. Kevin’s year has been chaotic because his focus is on Horizon and nothing else. He is leaving the charge to make this movie.
Although Kevin Costner invested heavily in Horizon, this is not all that he stands to lose. Firstly, he has two non-Hollywood investors. In this interview, he confessed that he would rather lose his own money, not theirs. This weighs heavily on him. Horizon has to be a success. Therefore, he is fully committed to this project because they are counting on him, and this is the dream he has been chasing for nearly four decades.
But, he is jeopardizing the Yellowstone film schedule. His portrayal of John Dutton is award-winning, but will soon end. He has said he is proud of this role, but it has come between him and his Horizon dream. He will do anything he can to make his project happen, and that likely includes his lack of availability to play the patriarch of Yellowstone.
Kevin Costner Has Issues With Paramount
Since February, there have been reports of chaos on the Paramount set. They need to film the remaining 6 episodes of Yellowstone Season 5. The leaks from the set have to do with Costner’s availability. He is only able to film a brief period, and Taylor Sheridan wants him for a lengthier period of time because Kevin is the star of the series.
Originally, they were supposed to film these episodes in 2022. But, Covid had a lot to do with these delays, as well as Sheridan’s very busy schedule. But, Costner is on a tight schedule, and he would not budge and give Sheridan more of his time. He started to film Horizon in the Spring.
Now, Paramount has announced that this will be the final season of Yellowstone. They seem to have moved on from this storyline and want to focus on Dutton spinoffs.
Also, it appears that Kevin’s personal life may have taken a hit because of this obsession. At the beginning of May, Christine Costner, Kevin’s wife, filed for divorce. There are rumors that she was fed up with his Yellowstone schedule. It now seems more likely that Horizon may have a bigger role in her frustration, not the Paramount series.
Kevin Costner Compares Horizon To Dances With Wolves
On Wednesday, Kevin Costner shared a photo of his Horizon director’s chair on Instagram. He wrote, “We’re deep into the production of #HorizonFilm, and, I have to tell you, I haven’t felt this way about a movie since we were making Dances With Wolves. Can’t wait to share it all with you.”
Kevin has been waiting 35 years to show his story to an audience. Yellowstone fans, will you be watching Horizon?
