‘American Idol’: Beckett McDowell Quits, Paige Ann Returns
On the latest episode of American Idol, contestant Beckett McDowell quit, and Paige Ann returned. Some fans have to wonder if this has something to do with celebrity judge Katy Perry. She’s received backlash for her behavior on Season 21 of the ABC singing competition.
Paige Ann returns
In a shocking turn of events, Ryan Seacrest announced on Monday’s episode of American Idol that a contestant left the competition. He also shared that Paige Ann returned to be part of the top 26. Fans remember her awkward audition process with the pop star, who has been slammed for her behavior on Season 21.
The 16-year-old snowcone maker got her ticket to Hollywood thanks to Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. However, Katy Perry wasn’t impressed with her. She didn’t even care to hear about her background story. Katy shared a rude remark about the hopeful.
“In the beginning, it was just ice. Not a whole lot of flavor,” Katy Perry coldly said at the time. “It was a real like, ‘She’s not ready,’ and then at the end, it was like, ‘Oh, OK! She may be able to compete!’ … You need to be motivated and grow at light speed.”
The “Roar” singer didn’t think Paige Ann was ready for Hollywood. She doesn’t see her becoming the next American Idol. Fans shared their thoughts on YouTube and called her out for her rude comments. Meanwhile, Luke and Lionel have seen potential in her.
During “Hawaii Night,” Paige gave a powerful rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” that blew everyone away. American Idol fans say she came back “stronger than ever.”
Beckett McDowell quits American Idol
American Idol fans quickly found out that it was Beckett McDowell was the one who quit the show. Yet, he was never shown on this season. He is the son of actor Malcolm McDowell and his wife Kelley Kuhr. On Tuesday, April 18, Beckett shared a statement on his Instagram Stories. He confirmed that he competed on the show even though ABC didn’t feature his performances throughout the season.
“I’m not going to say why I didn’t decide to continue in the competition but what I will say is that it was my choice,” Beckett wrote in his Instagram Story. “I am forever grateful to my American Idol family and I will always look back at the experience with the utmost gratitude and fondness.”
He encouraged fans to vote for his fellow contestants. Now, fans are trying to figure out what made Beckett quit the show. He’s not the only one who’s considered quitting this season. It’s been the toughest one yet.
Is Katy Perry to blame?
American Idol fans can’t help but point the finger at Katy Perry. The rumors first started when the show featured a group photo of the “Teenage Dream” singer with the Top 26 that also included Beckett, which fans never saw. Sara Beth almost quit this season, while Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart, left the show during Hollywood after insecurities following an illness.
