Hilary Duff was among the first celebrities to pay tribute after learning of Aaron Carter’s death. Considering Hilary and Aaron dated when they were teenagers for a period of time and Aaron appeared on an episode of Lizzie McGuire, fans of the singer were not too surprised to see Hilary’s sweet tribute to her former flame. Hilary Duff pays tribute to Aaron Carter

Just hours after news of his death broke, Hilary Duff took to Instagram to mourn the passing of her former flame. Hilary noted in her tribute that she was heartbroken Aaron’s life was so difficult. She hated that he was in a position where the whole world watched his struggle.

For Aaron- I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent…boy did my teenage self love you deeply. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest easy.”

Hilary concluded her post by encouraging her former boyfriend to “rest easy.” And, she sent as much love as she possibly could to Aaron’s family during this heartbreaking time.

The two dated for years

As fans of this adorable teenage couple remember, Aaron and Hilary were an item for nearly three years. They started dating back in 2000. They were just 13 at the time. He guest-starred in an episode of Lizzie McGuire. The episode involved Lizzie and her friends on a mission to meet Aaron (playing himself). In the episode, Hilary ended up kissing Aaron while they were under the mistletoe.

Aaron and Hilary reportedly broke up after rumors swirled that he cheated on her with Lindsay Lohan. In 2005, Aaron opened up about dating both Disney Channel stars.

I was dating her for like a year and a half, and then I just got a little bored, so I went and started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay. Then I didn’t want to do that anymore, so I got back with Hilary.”

Per E! Aaron affirmed during the final interview prior to his passing that Hilary Duff remained the only person to ever break up with him. And, it was because he broke her heart.
