Kelly Clarkson and actress Valerie Bertinelli have had extremely successful careers. However, they have both come under fire for the way that they look. Valerie Bertinelli Opens Up About Weight Struggles With Kelly Clarkson
It is no secret that Hollywood has set an exceptionally high standard for women. Valerie Bertinelli experienced this throughout almost most of her life. She got her big break as a teenager on the hit seventies sitcom One Day At A Time and went on to marry the late Eddie Van Halen. Bertinelli kept her career going and eventually had a resurgence when she appeared alongside Betty White on Hot In Cleveland. However, she saw her weight fluctuate up and down. This is something she shared during her appearance on Kelly’s daytime talk show.
According to Good Housekeeping, Valerie had this to say: “I learned at a young age that gaining weight was unlovable … so I’m still trying to purge that out of my system because that’s not true. It’s just a lie.” Bertinelli was also candid about how she was a part of the yo-yo diet trend. This is something she writes about in her new book Enough Already which she was promoting on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Interestingly enough, the host could relate to Valerie’s struggles. However, the actress seemed to have the utmost respect for how the singer handled public scrutiny.
Kelly’s Public Image
When viewers first met Kelly Clarkson a decade ago on American Idol, they were blown away by her amazing voice. Yet, like Bertinelli, her weight did fluctuate as time went on. Plus, she became a mother of two. Additionally, like her guest, she went through a divorce. So, how did she handle the criticism from those around her? “What I am glad about is, I think so many things happened to me when I was young about my weight that, even at a young age—like, so many things got said—that’s whenever I was just like: ‘Whatever, I’m not gonna please anyone.’”
Valerie was so blown away by how Kelly, 40 handled this and applauded her. In the end, the two women had words of wisdom for the year that is quickly coming to an end. “I’m just done judging myself. I’m done with all the negative talk that I give myself, because there’s enough negative talk out there,” declared Valerie. She is now “changing the perspective, and changing the view, and the narrative.” As for Kelly, she is practicing kindness, all around, not just to others but to herself.
