Grey's Anatomy from ABC

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is ready to try out other roles. The actress has played Dr. Meredith Grey in the long-running medical drama since 2005. And she thinks it might be time to start looking for greener pastures.

For many years now, Pompeo hinted that she’s ready to step away from Grey’s Anatomy and just move on to different projects. But for one reason or another, ABC keeps renewing Grey’s. Even after all these years, it’s still wildly popular with audience members.

So Ellen Pompeo will indeed be back for the new season of Grey’s Anatomy this fall. However, she is stepping back a bit and reducing her workload. Keep reading to learn more about Dr. Grey’s limited appearance fans will see this fall.

Grey’s Anatomy will have a lot less Meredith Grey this fall

Grey’s Anatomy still heavily focuses on Ellen Pompeo’s character, Meredith. But after 18 seasons, there are many other characters in the universe to focus on these days. Fans will definitely miss seeing Meredith, but it’s not a brand-new idea. After all, there was an entire season when she was stuck in a coma after contracting COVID-19. Grey’s has proved that it can function without Meredith, but it just won’t be the same show without her.

TV Line reports that Ellen Pompeo will appear in about eight episodes of Season 19. An average season of Grey’s has between 20-23 episodes. In other words, that’s a little under half of an entire season. However, the publication also reports that Pompeo will still play an active role behind the scenes as an executive producer and will also continue to narrate each episode.

Ellen Pompeo plans to star in a new true crime mini-series

Ellen Pompeo isn’t giving up on acting, however. There is still a lot that the actress wants to do. It just doesn’t necessarily involve scrubs or crowded ERs.

TV Line also reports that Pompeo’s latest project is in the works at Hulu at the moment. The publication describes the new project here:

“The eight-episode project is inspired by the true story of a Midwestern couple who adopts what they believe is an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe she may not be who she says she is. As they question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.”
