Has The Quality Of ‘My 600-Lb. Life’ Episodes Plummeted?

My 600-Lb. Life from TLC

Is it possible that episodes of My 600-Lb. Life just aren’t what they used to be? The popular TLC show has been around for over a decade. But in that time, many viewers noticed that newer episodes seem to have a lack of focus. And to make matters worse, the show doesn’t seem to have a strong focus on patient wellness any longer.

One recent Reddit thread recently discussed this idea. Keep reading to see what viewers determined.

My 600-Lb. Life production seems to cater to viewer interests

When My 600-Lb. Life came out, it took film crews seven years to film one patient’s story. To simplify production purposes, they cut that down to one year instead. There’s only so much a person can do with weight loss goals in a year. But the show made it work anyway.

But in more recent seasons, fans can’t help but notice the guests that appear on My 600-Lb. Life are unsuccessful. The inspiring success stories seem to be few and far between these days. And instead, the show airs a lot of cases where the patients are uncompliant, outrageous, and even rude at times.

So why is TLC airing more episodes like this these days?

If TLC wants to keep viewership high, they have to give the viewers what they want. And according to a recent Reddit thread, viewers may only be interested in the unsuccessful patients.

In the Reddit thread, the OP wondered why the show’s production quality has gone downhill. They confessed to missing the older episodes that featured many inspiring stories.

“Now, it feels like the majority of episodes are participants who don’t lose any weight, don’t ever quality for the surgery, and in some cases never even weigh in,” OP concluded.

“This is gonna sound bad but I only watch the episodes where the patients are horrible 😬” another Reddit user admitted. “I find them more interesting than the ones where patients put in effort.”

So could this really be the reason that newer episodes tend to focus on the outrageous patients?

Bad behavior seemingly rules the roost

After reading through this Reddit thread, it’s almost immediately apparent that My 600-Lb. Life viewers may not at all be interested in success cases. Sadly, it seems like patients like Steven Assanti command more attention than the participants who actually want to make a positive change in their lives.

Production will likely keep giving the people what they want.
