Mama June: Is She Really Legally Blind?
In the season premiere of Mama June: Road to Redemption, Mama June was in a pickle. She was trying to figure out how to change her life and escape Geno Doak. At the same time, she was missing vital parts of her daughters’ lives. During this, it briefly came up that Mama cannot actually see. So, is she blind, and if she is, how and when did that happen?
Mama June Tries To Make It Right
After completing rehab and avoiding jail time, June is attempting to get back in the good graces of her family. Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird has been taking over the majority of the responsibility since their mom left. She took in Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson and their older sister, Jessica while having a toddler, Ella. Then she got pregnant with her son and the family moved to a bigger home to accommodate everyone. June was struggling in her relationship with Geno as he would get drunk and become abusive. She told Pumpkin she wanted to leave him when he went to court. Pumpkin even traveled to the courthouse to rescue June but she chose to stay with Geno.
Then Pumpkin went into labor but Mama vanished so she missed the birth. It turned out she had gone to stay at a hotel after secretly leaving Geno. She resurfaced to officially break things off with the plan to go back and live with her daughter. This was not okay with Pumpkin or her husband Josh. They did not appreciate how she could vanish and then just pop back in especially after she missed Bentley’s birth. While in labor and missing her mama during the premiere, Pumpkin noted how June even got her eyes fixed to see Ella. Is Mama actually blind?
When Did June Lose Her Vision?
Yes, June is actually legally blind. According to The Sun, it all started when she was a child when she had cataracts that were never treated. “My eye problems started when I was born. I was born with cataracts and nothing was ever done,” she discussed on one of her shows. In 2014, she proceeded to go blind in her right eye. More so, her drug adduction further added to her vision loss. “I started snorting it, lost my vision, and then I quit and then I went into using… just smoking crack.”
Luckily, she was able to have surgery in 2018 for a detached retina. It was supposed to get her back to where she was prior as she did have one good eye. Though that one eye was beginning to go downhill, as well. Pumpkin noted Mama was so excited when Ella was born that she even had her eyes corrected so she could see the new baby. This was why it was so hard when she went MIA right as Bentley was getting ready to enter the world.
