Hollywood hotshot’s defamation trial grips nation

Johnny Depp has been one of the most bankable Hollywood hotshots for almost 40 years. The heartthrob got his big break in the 1984 cult classic A Nightmare on Elm Street.

In 2003, he began playing his now-iconic character Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black PearlThe franchise continued for five more films.

However, the sixth movie was allegedly scrapped after actress Amber Heard made shocking accusations of domestic violence against the beloved actor. Depp wed Heard in 2015. However, they divorced two years later.

After their divorce, Amber Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post detailing the abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of Johnny Depp, though she didn’t use his name in the piece.

Depp’s reputation took a serious hit after the allegations came out. He sued The Sun for libel after the British paper called him a “wife beater.” He lost that case in 2020, but his legal battle isn’t over.

In April 2022, his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife kicked off in Virginia (where The Washington Post is published.) The trial has gripped the nation as both actors take the stand to make mutual abuse accusations.

discovery+ releases Johnny Depp & Amber Heard documentary

The Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial is currently on a 10-day break after weeks of a flurry of viral moments. The discovery+ streaming service took the break as an opportunity to debut their highly-anticipated documentary Johnny Vs. Amber.

Deadline broke the news about the documentary in late 2021, though it originally had a fall release date. Amid the interest in the trial, the streamer released their exclusive look at the former couple’s toxic marriage.

However, the documentary heavily focuses on the 2020 trial in England, not the currently ongoing trial in the States. The press release boasts “tapes, home videos and text messages” from the libel suit.

The two-episode documentary also has interviews with people close to Heard and Depp.
