The Browns faced a lot of scrutiny amongst people who believed polygamy has many downfalls. There are accusations of cult-like behavior, child brides, and abuse. A “family not felons” protest featured on the hit reality series Escaping Polygamy which the Browns had supposed knowledge of. If they did, fans want to know how active the Browns are in trying to make any sort of abuse stop.

The Browns Put Their Life Out There

When Sister Wives premiered in 2010, the Brown family did it to raise awareness about polygamy. They wanted the world to see that plural marriages could function just fine. At the same time, polygamy wasn’t legal in Utah where they were living. Kody Brown, along with his three wives and twelve children, all resided in one home. It had actually been built by a polygamist and was designed for the three wives to live in a copacetic way. Kody was also in the process of courting his fourth wife, Robyn. This show was a real take on HBO’s hit series Big Love.

No one could look away and it went on to get renewed for a Season 2. During that time, the Browns escaped to Las Vegas in the middle of the night for fear Kody would get arrested. Christine understood the fear of this as her grandfather had been imprisoned for having multiple wives. She along with sister wives Meri and Robyn had been raised in polygamy so they all knew moving was a great option. Throughout the series, the only family who really understood them was another polygamist family, the Dargers.

Family Not Felons, Reality Or TV?

A ‘family not felons’ rally was held in Utah several years ago. Apparently, Kody did acknowledge that there is abuse in the polygamous culture. However, fans are wondering what he, if anything he and his family is doing to stop it. Furthermore, fans are wondering if they will only support something on camera and then let it drop when the lights go off. A Reddit thread was started to discuss this and fans have had a lot to say. “The Browns are only active in supporting things when the camera is on them,” one Redditor noted.

Another added: “There was the one episode about the teens volunteering with an organization that helps people leave abusive polygamy situations, but it was definitely more about the Browns convincing the survivors that polygamy wasn’t the problem and that they should still consider it… they were absolutely insistent that these kids “accept” them.” At this point, polygamy is no longer a crime but the equivalent of a traffic ticket. Some think the Browns being public contributed to that.

Do you think what the Browns do is just for cameras or do they really care? Let us know in the comments.
