Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum Stephanie Beatriz said she expected her termination. She had a feeling that her time on the comedy would eventually come to an end. Stephanie has since launched a new podcast, Twin Flames. The actress admitted that she was diving into “murky water” by starting this project.

Beatriz read an article on Vanity Fair about Jeff and Shaelia Ayan. The “self-proclaimed love gurus” share their secrets on relationships on their YouTube channel. Beatriz was fascinated by the fact that they “taken this idea of empathy, sympathy, compassion” and “twisted it and monetized it and created this very intense” fanbase of people who are simply looking for love.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Beatriz spoke out about her new project. She also feared her termination since she was one of two Latinas shooting a pilot.

Stephanie Beatriz talks about her bizarre new project

In the interview, Beatriz admitted that it was “fabulous reporting” that made her take on this new podcast. She was always “fascinated” by the concept of “Twin Flames.” She watched Jeff and Shaelia’s YouTube videos. Even though these two called themselves “gurus on love,” even though they never had any formal training.

“On the internet, anything can be real. And I’m fascinated by that, because in my industry the whole point is to tell a story that feels so real that people connect to it, and either want to see more of it or talk about it or feel some kind of cathartic something through it,” the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star told Entertainment Weekly. “As we enter into this awards season, there are tons of films that give you a window into worlds you haven’t been privy to before.”

Beatriz empathizes with Jeff and Shaelia’s followers. She thinks they’re that they’re simply seeking connection with others. She wanted to enter this “murky water” of “self-help through social media.” Beatriz has started dating again after her last relationship and admits that it can be easy to be enthralled by someone you only communicate with through the phone.

Feared termination from Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Beatriz also shared her fears over her termination from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She noticed that she was not the only Latina actress on the set of the show. Latino representation wasn’t big then. Thankfully, television has changed and there’s a wider diversity of characters and personalities.

“The fact that when I was cast on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I thought either me or Melissa Fumero was going to get fired…and we didn’t? The fact that I thought that, and now you can pick out any number of stars?”

Both actresses shot the pilot. Beatriz had a feeling that one of them had to go after. It was common in the industry to only have one person of color in the cast. Yet, Brooklyn Nine-Nine had many Black people, Latinos, and people of color in the cast. It was one of the first shows to make its diverse cast the main characters rather than the side jokes.
