Isabel Roloff opens up about being questioned for years.

In a new Instagram post this week, Isabel Roloff revealed that she’s been questioned for several years now. She says she still remembers the “first time anybody ever questioned my optimism.”

She says it happened when she was 17 years old and her family was visiting for her mom’s memorial after her tragic passing. Despite everything that was going on in her life, her neighbor told her something encouraging that made her smile.

Then, she wrote, “That’s when the neighbor across the street approached us and asked in an accusatory tone, ‘how are you smiling right now?'”

Isabel then went on to explain how she felt about this and how it still affects her today. She wrote, “It stood out to me, all these years later. Because when I reflect back on that time of my life, I remember it being sad but also extremely happy. A paradox, a contradiction! We were surrounded by so, so much love!”

Finally, Isabel Roloff wrote:

You can see I am smiling as I am dancing with my beloved brother. And that’s okay, too. Because if I’ve learned anything, it’s that I don’t have to choose my sadness over my optimism that everything is going to be okay, eventually, somehow. It’s actually one of my favorite traits about myself. And one thing I know for sure by now; grief and joy have always danced beautifully together.”
