Star-studded Celebrating Betty White honors beloved actress
When Betty White died just weeks shy of her 100th birthday, the tributes started pouring in. Prior to her unexpected passing, the iconic entertainer took part in a documentary about her life. Originally titled “Betty White: 100 Years Young — A Birthday Celebration,” it was revamped as a limited release movie, “Betty White: A Celebration.”
NBC, long-time home of the long-running sitcom The Golden Girls, has their own hour-long special planned.
Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl will feature White’s Hot in Cleveland co-star, Valerie Bertinelli. Additionally, Drew Barrymore and Ellen DeGeneres will take part in the tribute. President Joe Biden will also speak about Betty White’s legacy.
An icon in her own right, singer Cher will add something special to the celebration.
Cher gives Golden Girls theme song a new spin
From 1985 until 1992, Betty White starred as Rose Nylund in the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls. The opening theme song is easily as beloved as Rose’s St. Olaf stories.
For the NBC special, Cher put her own spin on the “Thank You For Being A Friend” theme song. She shared a teaser clip of her performance on her social media to promote the special.
When she sings “Your heart is true/ you’re a pal and a confidant” in her trademark tenor, it seems she’s singing right to Betty White. It turns out that Cher had a long-time friendship with the entertainer.
