Heading into the first PPV event of 2022, the match that most people were looking forward to was Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar. The build between Reigns and Lesnar has been ongoing since the Beast made his return at Summerslam last August. Despite this, less than 24 hours before WWE Day 1, Reigns tested positive for COVID-19 and was pulled from his Universal Title defense. As a replacement, Lesnar was inserted into the WWE Title match making the main event a Fatal 5-Way.

Other highlighted matches for WWE Day 1 included a grudge match between Edge and The Miz. Rated RKO defended the Raw Tag Team Titles against The Street Profits, while Liz Morgan challenged for Becky Lynch’s RAW Women’s Title. The event took place at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on January 1, 2022.

Edge gets his revenge

In recent weeks, The Miz and his wife Maryse have taken personal shots at WWE Hall of Famer Edge. It wasn’t just Edge that The Miz targeted, it was also his wife Beth Phoenix. Edge got some revenge last month on an episode of Monday Night Raw when The Miz and Maryse attempted to renew their wedding vows. During the ceremony, Edge’s music hit as he delivered a Brood Bath on the couple. With the personal hatred reaching a fever pitch, the match kicked off after Edge entered with his old Brood entrance.

The Miz was able to gain an early advantage, but Edge was quick to bounce back, including a face-first DDT to the floor. The Miz attempted a Face-crushing Finale on the announce table but it was reversed by Edge in the process to the road of the crowd. In the end, Maryse’s continued interference was balanced by the arrival of Phoniex allowing Edge to spear The Miz for the win.

Tag Team Title Showdown

RKBro defends their titles

The number one contenders to the Raw Tag Team Titles were The Street Profits who had their opportunity at the tiles at WWE Day 1. Accompanied by the rap group Migos, Randy Orton and Riddle had their work cut out for them against the young duo. At one point, Orton caught both members of the Street Profits by connecting with a double DDT from the inside ropes. As the action moved to the outside, Montez Ford took out both Orton and Riddle with a flipping plancha to the floor. In the end, Riddle elevated Ford into an RKO by Orton for the win.

Brock back on top

The match started strong with Lesnar and Bobby Lashley cleaning house before Lashley speared Lesnar through the barricade. Back in the ring, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins teamed up to take out Lashley but Big E had other ideas. Big E grabbed Lashley and put him through the announce table between Owens and Rollins continued their teamwork. The match continued at a fire pace, with each wrestler getting an opportunity to shine. In closing, Lesnar caught Big E with the F-5 to become the new WWE Champion.
