‘Bringing Up Bates’ Family DRAGGED For Courtship Double Standards

Bringing Up Bates fans know that Kelly Jo and Gil’s kids court rather than date. Their family’s rules are similar to the Duggars’. Courting is essentially dating with the intent to marry. Rather than dating around, the kids might only court one person before getting married. Also in their courtships, the Duggars and Bates kids limit PDA. In both families, some of the kids haven’t kissed their spouse until they are at the altar on their wedding day.

However, after a few recent posts from Lawson Bates, fans are beginning to wonder how exactly courting works in this family. They think that Lawson might be breaking the rules or that he has entirely different rules to follow. What’s going on here, and what do fans have to say about it?

Bringing Up Bates fans notice glaring double standards.

As we reported, Lawson is now engaged to Tiffany Espensen after a romantic proposal in Italy! While the couple is on their trip, they have posted several gorgeous pictures of themselves and all of the famous sights. The pair seems to be very close and comfortable with each other, however, sparking a discussion about them possibly having different courtship rules than the other kids in the family.

Fans have especially noticed that the Bates girls have to follow the rules more closely, while Kelly Jo and Gil seem to be more relaxed with their sons. This is purely speculation though, and the family hasn’t confirmed anything. On Reddit, fans are discussing Lawson’s recent photo in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In the steamy series of photos, he and Tiffany are extremely close.

One fan points out that this doesn’t look like a side hug, and in response, another adds, “That’s only for the Bates unmarried GIRLS. The boys can pretty much do whatever they want depending on the father of whom their courting. Tiffy appears to have had some independence so I doubt this is an issue within the family. Which is BEYOND to infuriating to me.”

Another Reddit user adds:

“I think it’s two things:

  1. As discussed, the girl’s family sets the rules. The Espensens do not care, clearly. Which is their prerogative. So no rules there. At the same time…

  2. This is also definitely a double standard. If one of their sons-in-law wanted to do that with one of their daughters pre-marriage, it wouldn’t have flown. So that’s annoying.

Yeah, it’s a little of both. Tiffany has no rules and Lawson has no problem not following them! I still doubt that Gil and KJ appreciate that, but they also can’t really stop it, so that’s it.”

Fans think that the woman’s family gets to make the courtship rules, so that would explain why the Bates family appears to be stricter with their daughters than their sons. It’s also worth noting that Lawson is 29, while many of his sisters have gotten married much younger.

  1. In the first place, Lawson Bates is 29 years old, his not a little boy and what he does is his business, he’s a grown man. Kelly Jo and Gil have no say so over him. A lot of parents have children that disappoint them, but that’s life. It’s not like they are having sex in public, it’s a hug.

  2. That’s bull this show was great if lawson is the reason to cancel then put him off the program don’t blame the restof the family sorry to say we love this show so i guess my family wont be watching up tv No more
