Jenna Johnson Admits Marriage Is Challenging During ‘DWTS’ Season
Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy are just one of many married couples that compete on Dancing With The Stars. While it may be fun to work with your spouse sometimes, it can’t always be easy competing against them every year. And COVID-19 hasn’t exactly made the situation any easier.
Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson can’t live together while they compete
Last year, DWTS required married couples to quarantine apart from each other. The idea was to stop the virus from impacting any more competitors in case one person came down with it. This year, it seems like the situation is the same.
“It was a challenge for us to find a good balance of work life and home life because we were constantly talking about work, and this was a few years ago and so we really pushed ourselves to finish work at the door, come home and just be humans, just be a married couple,” Jenna told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview. “Obviously, [this] season [it] has been a little bit easier to do that because we can’t live together because of COVID.”
But even so, Jenna adds that it’s not exactly fun living apart from her spouse while filming.
“So from afar, we’re just checking in on each other. We’ll send each other some sneak peek videos and be like, ‘What do you think? What do you think?’ But yeah, I think that that’s been something that we’ve really worked on is leaving work at work and just coming home and being with each other.”
The 27-year-old dancer admits that physical touch is her love language. So if she can’t be near Val and actually touch him, she doesn’t feel fulfilled.
Both Jenna and Val are expected to go pretty far in the competition this year, so it could be a while before the two are reunited.
The married couple each has an excellent shot of winning the Mirrorball Trophy
This year, Val Chmerkovskiy is paired with influencer Olivia Jade while Jenna Johnson has JoJo Siwa. Both teams score impeccably well week after week.
But even though there are several married couples on the show, no one has ever gone up against their spouse in the finale.
“There’s never been a married couple in the finals together, so I want to be that first one this season with him,” the So You Think You Can Dance alum added. “And then whoever brings home the Mirrorball, I don’t even care because then we have four [between the two of them] and it’s, like, even on our mantle … it’s going to balance each other, but I would love obviously to win that Mirrorball, but I would be so proud if he won that Mirrorball.”
Other married couples on the show include Emma Slater and Sasha Farber and Daniella Karagach and Pasha Pashkov. Pasha and his partner Christine Chiu left the show last week.
