‘Prison Break’ Wentworth Miller Reveals Autism Diagnosis, Overwhelmed By Support
Prison Break star Wentworth Miller took to Instagram a few days ago to reveal his autism diagnosis. According to his post, it has been a year since his “informal diagnosis. For those who don’t follow Wentworth Miller on Instagram… He’s very poetic. He always has very long and in-depth, messages to share with his followers. And, his “coming out” as being on the spectrum was no exception. The actor had very beautiful things to say. Based on the responses in his comments, he was welcomed into the autism community with open arms.
The actor calls getting diagnosed as an adult a ‘flawed’ process
Turns out, Wentworth Miller considers his autism diagnosis to be an “unexpected gift.” He, however, recognized it was a gift that a lot of people didn’t necessarily want. Wentworth explains that he self-diagnosed about a year ago. His self-diagnosis was followed by a formal diagnosis. The Prison Break star recognizes “access to a diagnosis is a privilege many do not enjoy.” He, however, also believes the process of diagnosing an adult with autism is “flawed.”
It was a long, flawed process in need of updating. IMO. I’m a middle-aged man. Not a 5-year-old.”
The actor was shocked to receive the diagnosis. But, at the same time, he was NOT surprised by it. He continued to explain he was not
Wentworth Miller’s autism diagnosis has him reflecting on his entire life
The actor was VERY careful not to offend with his words. He admitted he didn’t want to be the “loud” and ill-informed” one in the room. But, he wanted to raise his hand and own his diagnosis. The diagnosis of autism as caused Wentworth Miller to reflect on his entire life. And, he’s seeing a lot of things differently. He believes autism is “central” to who he is and who he’s always been. Suddenly, a lot of things from his past make a lot more sense to him.
The actor proceeded to thank people who have been patient with him over the years. This was especially true for those who gave him extra space when he needed it without realizing why.
Oh – I also want to say to the many (many) people who consciously or unconsciously gave me that extra bit of grace + space over the years, allowed me to move thru the world in a way that made sense to me whether or not it made sense to them… thank you.”
He’s been leaning on social media content creators
The Prison Break star acknowledges there are a lot of social media influencers — especially on TikTok — that have been “schooling” him on autism. And, he encourages anyone else who needs information on autism to look into these resources as well.
Wentworth Miller is overwhelmed by the autism community support
The Prison Break actor took to Instagram again a few hours ago. It was a very warm post with red, orange, and yellow squares as the picture. Wentworth Miller was overwhelmed and moved by the support he has received from the autism community.
He thanked his followers for their love and support. And, he asked for them to continue to educate him and share resources with him. Wentworth Miller was new to this community and he wanted to explore everything.
