More Information

Kelsey Chow

Kelsey Chow plays the unlikeable Monica Dutton in the series Yellowstone. Fans may remember Chow from the series One Tree Hill where she plays the role of Gigi. More recently, she currently appears as Swanee Capps in the television series Fargo. Being the oldest of three siblings, a younger brother as well as a younger sister, Chow has had a successful career. She studied dance at a young age and fell in love with performing. Chow performed in school plays as well as community theaters. She became a member of the Hammond Select Ensemble, where she would go on to perform in Italy and other far-off places.

The Yellowstone star has gone by the name Kelsey Chow throughout most of her career. After landing roles in Wind River and Yellowstone, where she plays Native American women, she chooses to use the name Kelsey Asbille.

Hating On Monica

One fan of Yellowstone recently felt the need to share their dislike of Monica on Reddit.

“I cant describe it. I want to fast forward every scene that she’s in. I’m rewatching season 3 and she said something like “don’t kill something when you’re loving me.” Ugh! I just want her to stop talking. Is it the actress or the character? She’s the most boring person alive.

I dont want the show runners to kill her off, but maybe she can move far, far away and leave Tate and Kayce.

There are boring characters in every show but for some reason, she’s unbearable to watch. Is it just me?”

Some Redditors came to Monica’s defense saying,

“I never understood the hate against her. The actress is kind of weak and the character is a bit bland but she is OK imo. I agree she is probably one of the less interesting characters tho.”

Others were in total agreeance.

“She drives me insane. She’s just so blahh. Also her now living on the ranch and benefiting from it but bitching about it at the same time drives me insane. It’s kinda like biting the hand that feeds you.

I don’t know she’s just my least favorite and if they killed her off it wouldn’t change the show in my opinion.”

Poor Casting?

One Redditor has an issue with the casting of the Native American character.

“For me, it’s the character AND the actress. The character is so dull . She adds little to the show IMO and it’s hard to follow her story arc. I think they just added her to a native character in the family. I also take issue with the show hiring an Asian-American actress to play someone native. She also lied about being Eastern Band Cherokee and began using “Kelly Asbille” professionally rather than “Kelly Chow” (I believe Asbille is her middle name).”

Whatever your opinion, it is clear that Monica has been one of the most disliked characters on Yellowstone. There are plenty of reasons to dislike her. Fans of Kayce may take it personally the number of things Monica has put Kayce through. It is not to say Kayce is a perfect husband. However, it is not as if Monica was unaware of Kayce’s background when they married. What do you think? Is Monica unjustly hated? Or is there validity to what fans are saying? 1. The writing for Monica is probably supposed to be thought provoking, but comes off as totally hypocritical and victim orientation. What a drama queen!

  2. Yellowstone is the absolute best show on TV, and I love it. Of course, there are those who have to complain about everything….they can’t just sit and watch a great show. I was married to a person like that. She was so negative, she would complain about winning the lottery, saying dang, now I have to pay all those taxes. Haha, but true.
I think Monica adds some reason and stability to Kayce’s craziness. I like the chemistry between them. She’s cool headed but not boring. I think she’s nailed the part of Monica and is a really good actress (and gorgeous). To the haters, I say, you’re just jealous cuz she snagged Kayce. 🙂
All of the characters are awesome, but my top three would be: 1. John Dutton (of course); 2. Beth Dutton; and 3. Rip. No disrespect to the rest of the cast…like I said, they are all awesome.
Oh yeah, don’t forget Teeter. I get a real kick out of her character. She’s quite the little fireball. Reminds me of my youngest daughter.
So, to all the haters, just sit back and watch the show. Try not to get all worked up about something that’s simply meant to entertain you.

  3. I believe it’s the way her character is written. She whines and gripes continuously. The very day she gets the house she wants, she starts griping at Kayce about something else. Her character makes women look bad. She never appreciates anything she has and she is going to let Tate continue to have his way when he shouldn’t and somebody needs to “ride the foul out of his mouth” like the other kid.
She knew what Kayce was like when she married him. A leopard doesn’t change his spots. Tate is their child, not just hers. She is ruining that kid.

  4. I agree she is a waste..looks like a 16 year old acts like a 7 yr old…College professor she is not….rest of cast perfect her no way…Casey needs a tough chick not a whiney wimp..

  5. I just started watching this show recently and I think it’s the way her character is being written. I thought she was good in Season 1 and I think the writers wanted to start expanding her character but they really hadn’t initially planned on it so they’re finding themselves having to create more lines/involvement and it’s just not working. I don’t know enough about the actress, or her other roles, but I think she is fine… I really think it boils down to how the character is written.

  6. The actress that plays Monica is trained, but she is not a gifted. I can’t connect with her. She doesn’t make me feel anything. She certainly is beautiful. She makes a great model.

    1. I have to fast forward any scene she’s in, can’t stand listening to her whine and complaining and all the passive aggression toward Kaycie.
