How Did Madison Reyes Audition For Julie And The Phantoms?
According to an exclusive interview with People Magazine, Madison Reyes’ audition for Julie and the Phantoms took place when she was just 14 years old. She, however, admits auditioning for the role didn’t make her nearly as nervous as other aspects of her life. After all, she was a young teenager. She had a lot going on.
The night before I went to take my driver’s permit test, I was so nervous. I was on the phone with my friend and I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, what if I don’t pass? I just want to get it done on the first try.’ And they were like, ‘Girl, you are literally the lead in a Netflix TV show. Why are you nervous about this?’ I was more nervous about this than I was for the actual audition. It didn’t make any sense!”
Fortunately, the young actress was worried for nothing. She passed her driving test. She even took to Instagram to reveal the big news sometime later.

It was a little over two years ago that she auditioned for the role. Her freshman year of high school. Interestingly enough, it was a teacher that pushed her in the direction of giving the audition for a lead role a chance.
At first, she was hesitant to give it a try
Could you imagine Julie and the Phantoms with someone else playing Julie? Well, it almost happened. Initially, Madison Reyes was not sure she even wanted the part. But, she took a chance anyway. She sent in her audition tapes. And, she received calls from important people.
My dad was like, ‘This is directed by Kenny Ortega and I don’t know what you did to get these people’s attention, but I’m very proud of you.’ It was crazy. The first call that I actually ever had with someone was actually with Kenny just before I left [for the next audition in person]. He was basically like, ‘There’s no need to be nervous. We’re here for you. We want you to know this is going to be a comfortable and safe place. There’s no need to come here and be someone that you’re not.’ It was like having a phone call with a family member who I was going to visit at a different location.”
Madison Reyes admits meeting Kenny Ortega wasn’t as nerve wracking as she expected. In fact, he approached her with a hug when they first met. And, he did hid part to encourage her not to be nervous.
After landing the role, she admits she clicked very quickly with her co-stars (and ghostmates) Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada), and Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner).
