Derek Hough to Return to ‘DWTS’ Season 29, But in What Role?
Dust off those dancing shoes! Derek Hough is returning to Dancing With The Stars this season! In a surprise twist, ABC posted to their social media the surprising news. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a few days to find out what role the professional dancer will take on for Season 29.
Will he be a dancer? A judge? A co-host? Take your best guesses!
ABC Teases Derek Hough’s Return to DWTS
Hours after ABC’s official announcement for the celebrity contestants of Season 29, they had another surprise for fans. The network took to social media to reveal that Derek Hough will be back to DWTS in some capacity.
However, the big reveal won’t happen until next Tuesday on Good Morning America.

Fans took to social media to weigh in on what they think Derek will be doing. Given that ABC announced 15 stars to go with the previously announced 15 dancers, it’s unlikely Derek will be hitting the dance floor.
Unless ABC has another star in their back pocket to pair with Derek. Could he be replacing a judge? Fans would likely not take kindly to yet another change on a season full of changes.
Fans are already in an uproar over DWTS firing Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews as co-hosts. Former America’s Got Talent Tyra Banks will be the solo host for Season 29. Or will Derek be her co-host??
Entertainment Tonight notes that if Derek is added as a pro dancer, he would be on a quest for his 7th Mirrorball Trophy. Derek hasn’t been a pro dancer on DWTS since Season 23.
He moved on to judge World of Dance alongside Jennifer Lopez.
What About World of Dance?
World of Dance just recently wrapped up Season 4 earlier this summer. The finale was filmed without an audience due to COVID-19. Since its latest season just ended, the show likely won’t return to NBC until next year. If it returns at all.
NBC has yet to announce if the show will return for a Season 5. However, with coronavirus still raging, a live audience is a hit or miss at this point.
In fact, ABC has yet to clarify if there will be a live audience during Season 29 of Dancing With The Stars. All we really know so far is that the pro dancers are in quarantine separately. That means married couples on the show are living separately for the time being.
ABC is holding off on announcing the pro/celebrity pairings until the premiere, like they did last season. However, the DWTS Wikipedia page has a list of presumed pairings.
Time will tell if the pro pairings are correct. Tune in to Season 29 of Dancing With The Stars on Monday, September 14.
