Steve Harvey, 67, of Welch, West Virginia, is a multi-talented American comedian, actor, author, and television show host. At one point in his life, Steve Harvey found himself living out of his car with only $35 to his name. Feeling defeated, Harvey turned to his faith and prayed for guidance. In a vulnerable moment, he recalled crying and telling God ” Man, I’ve been trying to make this dream come true. You done left me out here like this.” Harvey then said that he felt like God was talking back to him saying ” Get up, and I’ll take you places you ain’t never been.” Not long after, Steve received a message on his answering machine from Chuck Sutton.
Chuck Sutton worked at Showtime at the Apollo and invited Harvey to perform on their Sunday night lineup. The only problem was Steve Harvey didn’t have enough money to fly to New York. He was eventually offered another gig from a venue in Jacksonville, Florida. With this opportunity, Harvey had earned enough money to book a flight to New York and perform at The Apollo. When Harvey arrived, his comedy skit was an instant hit, earning him a standing ovation. He recalled walking off the stage in tears, he felt overwhelmed by the support he had received. This performance led Steve to be offered a job as the host of Amateur Night at The Apollo, where he became the longest-running host in the show’s history. This is where Harvey’s rise to fame began.
