Reba McEntire To Star In Film From ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ Author
Country music star and The Voice coach Reba McEntire has had quite a few notable acting roles over the years. Now, the star is set to star in and produce a new film. Notably, the project adapts a novel from famed Southern author Fannie Flagg.
Reba McEntire Is Set To Both Produce & Star In The Project
McEntire has had quite a few acting roles over the years, including her own namesake sitcom. More recently, she has served as the star and executive producer of the NBC sitcom Happy’s Place.
Another upcoming project for the star is a film adaptation of the Fannie Flagg novel, The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion. Notably, McEntire is set to both star in the film and serve as a producer.
Flagg is arguably best known for her 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which she adapted into the 1991 film, Fried Green Tomatoes. She is also noted as an actress and game show panelist, notably appearing on Match Game.
According to Southern Living, a press release shared that the story revolves around an “empty nester,” Mrs. Sookie Poole, who wants to settle into life after her daughter’s marriage. However, she starts to receive letters claiming she was adopted, bringing up questions about her past.
Poole then finds herself down “a rabbit hole of self-discovery” while trying to uncover the truth about her past. Her search leads her to learn about ”the swashbuckling story of Fritzi Jurdabralinski and her sisters, a daring group of women who ran the first All Girl Filling Station during WWII and ultimately became the first female Air Force pilots.”
McEntire Was Previously Attached To Another Fannie Flagg Project
In addition to McEntire serving as a producer, Callie Khouri is also attached to serve as a director. Khouri is the creator of the Nashville TV series, served as a producer for Thelma & Louise, and wrote the movie version of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
Interestingly enough, this is not the first Flagg project McEntire has been attached to. Back in 2020, she was set to work on a television adaptation of Fried Green Tomatoes. At the time, Flagg and the late Norman Lear were also attached, with Flagg and McEntire both serving as potential executive producers.
Intended as a modern take on the novel, McEntire was also set to play Idgie Threadgoode. Reportedly, NBC was also reportedly involved with the drama series. However, it appears to have since been shelved.
According to AL.com, McEntire discussed the project’s fate of the “Taste of Country Nights, On Demand” podcast. As she shared, “It just kinda went away, unfortunately… We were right in there in the running and they passed on it… It was a great idea, it had a great script written for it. That’s showbiz.”
