‘1000-Lb Best Friends’ Confused On Meghan’s Revision Surgery
During 1000-Lb Best Friends Season 3, one of the major plotlines circled around Meghan Crumpler’s desire for revision surgery. She’s come incredibly far from her time on Too Large, when she weighed nearly 500 lbs. However, Meghan still isn’t satisfied with her weight loss progress.
Dr. Charles Procter agreed to perform a revision surgery if Meghan proved she could lose 30-40 lbs on her own. She eventually did, and Dr. Procter granted her wish in the Season 3 finale.
But fans remain a little confused. Why did the surgeon agree to the procedure?
1000-Lb Best Friends Fans Don’t Understand Dr. Procter’s Decision
Over the course of the series, Meghan Crumpler often butts heads with Dr. Procter. During Season 2, she even stormed out of his office when he chastised her for failing to follow his directions.
So why did he agree to the revision procedure?
“Why did Meghan qualify for revision surgery?” a 1000-Lb Best Friends viewer asked on Reddit. “I actually thought/hoped when Dr. Procter sat back down with her after the weigh in that he was going to say ‘See you can do this without a surgical revision.’ I wish they would explain why her and Ashley qualify for a revision. Did they stretch out their stomach? If so, how do they know, did they scope the stomach? While they’re at it explain what she did differently to lose 50 lbs when she went so long without losing.”
Redditors Share Their Thoughts & Ideas
Of course, no one but Dr. Procter can say for sure why he agreed to the procedure. But several viewers had opinions of their own.
“She didnt lose enough in the first year/year and a half after her surgery, so her body set point stabilized at about 300 pounds. The point of the surgery is to allow that set point to go lower,” another Redditor added. “… Giving her a revision maximizes her chances of lowering her weight set point since she’s proven (through the trial period) that she’s going to do the work while her body would be in weight-loss mode after the surgery”
Other comments included:
- “She and Ashely are lying to themselves – Dr. Now would have let them go”
- “She’s on a tv show. You know if she wasn’t she wouldn’t have kept the weight off or been approved for another surgery.”
- “Yes! I am curious too. It seems like she got over the plateau and is on track again now, so I don’t understand why go under the knife again. Will they explain it? Was that the finale?”
- “Because they are on a show about surgery and weight loss. It gets them a paycheck.”
